EIN E-Alert #178........Sunday 3 July 2005

Hi everyone

It has flown by so fast but the new EIN website turned 1 year old on July 1. Piers and I want to thank everyone for their support and words of encouragement. In just 12 months the site has grown exponentially and is now one of the world's biggest and best sources of Elvis news, information, reviews and interviews.

In the past week we added a new Elvis Conspiracy section to the site - for those fans interested in some of the more amazing stories in the Elvis world. While EIN doesn't necessarily believe the stories in this section they are of interest to many fans.

Nigel and Piers

"Avoid the Estate Planning Blunders of Marilyn and Elvis"

(Morningstar.com, 30 June 2005)

Do you need a trust?: Consider the estate of Elvis Presley. When he died in 1977, his estate was valued at more than $10 million. Unfortunately, his estate went through probate, and taxes and fees consumed a stunning 73% of the estate's value, leaving his heirs with less than $3 million. Much of that could have been avoided if Presley had established a trust.

Graceland's Table: Recipes and Meal Memories Fit for the King of Rock and Roll (Ellen Rolfes)

Graceland's Table is the first cookbook to be written with the full cooperation of Elvis Presley Enterprises. In addition to recipes for Elvis's favorite foods, the book will include photographs of Elvis at home and full-color food photos taken in Graceland for the book.

The 175 recipes in Graceland's Table will come from two sources: EPE's archives of Elvis's favorite recipes and Elvis's fans. The recipes from the fans will be solicited through EPE's electronic newsletter, its catalog, and the more than 400 fan clubs. Fans will submit a recipe they would have like to cook for Elvis should they have been invited to Graceland for a meal and to explain the reason for their choice. Fans will also be asked to submit recipes linked to a particular song or movie title or person in Elvis's life (e.g. Love Me Chicken Tenders, Colonel Parkerhouse Rolls, Blue Suede Berry Pie. Twelve recipes will come from EPE and over 150 from the fans.

The book will also have 35 B&W photos of Elvis and Graceland and 20 full-color food photos, trivia, and stories by those who knew Elvis such as Joe Esposito, member of the Memphis Mafia, Patty Perry, the only female member of the Memphis Mafia, and Marian Cocke, Elvis's nurse.

"Graceland's Table" is due to be released in the US this month

Ask EIN

Each week EIN receives many questions from fans around the world. A selection of questions and our answers will appear regularly in the E-Alert.

Robert Vasilevski: Is it true that Elvis had cosmetic surgery on his face and eyebrows tinted jet black in 1975?

EIN: Robert, if you don't own Peter Guralnick's two books Last Train To Memphis
& Careless Love - they should be your priority purchase number One !!! Anyway,
your answer is indeed in 'Careless Love'. On June 15th Elvis went into Mid-South Hospital for "extensive eye examination" which was in fact a  minor eye-lift performed by cosmetic surgeon Dr Koleyni. Everyone including Dr Nick tried to talk Elvis out of having the cosmetic surgery but he wouldn't listen.Billy Smith stayed with him in hospital but said that it did ruin the sleepy-sexy look of his eyes.

Elvis' eyebrows & side-burns were tinted & dyed when Charlie Hodge or Larry Geller dyed his hair. In some later live photos you can just see the whiteness of Elvis' genuine hair colour showing at the roots of his sideburns.

Elvis Trivia Question

The answer to our question in E-Alert #176 sparked a flood of emails. Last week we said George Klein & Marty Lackar were best men at Elvis and Priscilla's wedding. The correct answer was of course Joe Esposito & Marty Lackar. Our deliberate mistake marks the return of a feature we ran in the early days of the E-Alert - occasionally publishing a deliberate error and offering an Elvis prize for identifying the error.

For correctly identifying last week's error, Suzie Wright has won a copy of the new BMG CD, Elvis by the Presleys. From time to time we will "deliberately" include errors in the E-Alert so if you spot one let us know. You might just win a prize.

What "demo" recording is included on the new BMG CD release, Elvis by the Presleys?

(Last week's answer: Yes...Elvis did own a dune buggy)
