Elvis Week 2024 Concerts: A quick wrap-up of what EPE presented as the main 'Elvis Week 2024' concerts.
The Elvis 'Back In Memphis' concert on August 13 featured a focus on live material taken from the new 'Elvis MEMPHIS' box-set. It was hosted by Andy Childs alongside Terry Mike Jeffrey and Patrick Dunn who has a fantastic and powerful voice.
It first showcased Elvis' SUN sessions using only a four-piece band, kicking off with 'Mystery Train' and after 3 more Sun classics ended with 'That's All Right', there were no special guests.
Bringing on more musicians, the horn section and Backing-Vocalists next there was a 35 minute look at the 1969 'American Sound' sessions.
It kicked off with a rather fine and extended 'Rubberneckin' sung by Andy Childs. (Did no one tell them this song was left off the new MEMPHIS set? They also performed 'And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind' also NOT on the new release!).
Special guests included Donna Rhodes Morris (backing vocalist on the original 1969 sessions) and fabulous Memphis Boys drummer Gene Chrisman joined the band for the three final songs, In The Ghetto, Kentucky Rain and Suspicious Minds.
Gene Chrisman, looking very much like The Rolling Stones' Charlie Watts!
The fabulous STAX composer and producer David Porter then came on to discuss the importance of STAX and Elvis' sessions at the studio. He explained how he already knew Elvis since both he and his buddy Isaac Hayes had been previously asked by Elvis to perform at a nightclub for Elvis' private parties.
He also reminded everybody that Chips Moman had in fact worked at STAX before moving to create 'American Sound' studio.
Special guest Norbert Putnam came on to play bass and also explain that Elvis' sessions were the easiest he had ever worked on. Then five STAX session songs followed
Promised Land was particularly funky with Norbert on bass followed by an extremely good 'Feeling In My Body' with Norbert obviously really enjoying playing it.
Special guest Glen D Hardin then arrived. He needed a helping hand to get on stage but he was in fine form, laughing a lot and playing extremely well. There was no sign of any health issue that had been rumoured.
After a special bonus of 'My Boy' they then moved on to the Graceland sessions.
Glen Hardin stayed for 'Hurt' followed by 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' for which they brought back Norbert Putnam (he played bass on the original Nashville session) so it was a treat seeing them both working together. (photo right) 'For The Heart' and 'Moody Blue' followed before the great Stamps bass singer Larry Strickland came on to do his very best "JD" impression for the big finale of 'Way Down'.
It was a very enjoyable concert even if all too few TCB Band members were present.
The August 16 Main concert was 'Elvis: Return to Vegas' with Elvis on the big video screen above the stage - all taken from TTWII.
The "genuine" Elvis musicians this time were Larry Strickland with Terry Blackwood & Jim Murray (of the Imperials) plus Donna Rhodes Morris who along with her daughter providing the female (Sweets) backing-vocals.
It was, as you can imagine, a fairly straight forward run-through of the TTWII 'Big Screen' concert.
Jerry Shilling came on first to introduce the show.
It was also a positive to have various pauses in the show where Elvis' musicians who are no longer with us were presented via old interviews where the talked about working with Elvis.
These clips included Joe Guercio, The Sweet Inspirations as well as Imperials Armond Morales and Joe Moscheo.
Elvis's 1969 monologue was also used so that he could explain how he loved live performing after "I got stuck in a rut in Hollywood"
The show started with 'That's All Right', 'I Got A Woman', 'Hound Dog' and ended with 'Polk Salad Annie', 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', 'Suspicious Minds' and of course 'Can't Help Falling In Love.'
EIN member Mandy Squair who was at the concert rightly noted, "It was at this concert where it stood out just how many of the original Elvis people are now gone, or are too old to join these performances".
While EIN does not get a positive vibe from Elvis Impersonator concerts and their large presence at "ELVIS WEEK", forty-seven years after Elvis' sad passing it is hard to know how EPE can keep up the momentum of live concerts which include 'real' Elvis acquaintances.
I am personally very glad that I got to witness the first ELVIS 1998 'Big Screen' world-tour with the stunning TCB Band.

Emilio Santoro wins 'Ultimate Elvis' 2024: Rather oddly, this year EPE did not send out a press release congratulating 2024's Ultimate ETA winner Emilio Santoro.
This is strange as for once he was actually rather good!
Emilio Santoro has previously won European and World Championships as Elvis and appeared on America's Got Talent.
Santoro comes from Weston-Super-Mare in England and became a feature Elvis at just 14 years of age.
'From Here to the Great Unknown': We are only six weeks from the publication of Lisa Marie Presley's
memoir and
Penguin-Random House is promoting the new book.
The publication date has now been moved to October 8, 2024.
They note...
... Born to an American myth and raised in the wilds of Graceland, Lisa Marie Presley tells her whole story for the first time in this raw, riveting, one-of-a-kind memoir faithfully completed by her daughter, Riley Keough.
In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-gestating memoir.
A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and now grieved.
Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, lay in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them. About getting dragged screaming out of the bathroom as she ran toward his body on the floor. About living in Los Angeles with her mother, getting sent to school after school, always kicked out, always in trouble. About her singular, lifelong relationship with Danny Keough, about being married to Michael Jackson, what they had in common. About motherhood. About deep addiction. About ever-present grief. Riley knew she had to fulfill her mother’s wish to reveal these memories, incandescent and painful, to the world.
"To make her mother known".
Profoundly moving and deeply revealing, From Here to the Great Unknown is a book like no other—the last words of the only child of an American icon.
EIN has spotted some great deals for the book including Amazon US offering the hard-cover at only $21.50 that's 33% discount. -

'Fantasy Femmes of Sixties Cinema: Interviews with 20 Actresses from Biker, Beach, and Elvis Movies':Tom Lisanti is an award-winning film historian who specializes in 1960s-70s film and TV. His name is probably not known to many Elvis fans as he has never written a book solely about Elvis. However, his series of books about 1960s films, particularly those focusing on beach and drive-in movies, are filled with interviews and information about Elvis from numerous of his (female) co-stars. One of his books,Fantasy Femmes of Sixties Cinema: Interviews with 20 Actresses from Biker, Beach, and Elvis Movies, is being reissued in softcover (322 pages; illustrated - b&w) on August 30 (it was originally published in 2003). It is described as:
... "Elvis Presley musicals, beach romps, biker flicks, and alienated youth movies were some of the most popular types of drive-in films during the sixties. The actresses interviewed for this book (including Celeste Yarnall (cover image), Lana Wood, Linda Harrison, Pamela Tiffin, Deanna Lund, Diane McBain, Judy Pace, and Chris Noel) all made their mark in these genres. These fantastic femmes could be found either twisting on the shores of Malibu, careening down the highway on a chopper, being serenaded by Elvis, or taking on the establishment as
hip coeds. As cult figures, they contributed greatly to that period of filmmaking aimed at the teenage audience who frequented the drive-ins of America. They frolicked, screamed, and danced their way into B-movie history in such diverse films as Eve, Teenage Millionaire, The Girls on the Beach, Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine, Three in the Attic, Wild in the Streets, and Paradise, Hawaiian Style.
"This book is a celebration of the actresses' careers. They have for the most part been overlooked in other publications documenting the history of film. Fantasy Femmes addresses their film and television careers, focusing on their view of the above genres, their candid comments and anecdotes about their films, the people they worked with, and their feelings in general regarding their lives and the choices they made. The book is well illuminated and contains a complete list of film and television credits."
Other Tom Lisanti titles worth investigating for information about Elvis include Drive-In Dream Girls: A Galaxy of B-Movie Starlets of the Sixties (see separate post)and Talking Sixties: Drive-In Movies.
Most, if not all, of Tom Lisanti's books are available in hardcover, softcover and digital (Kindle) formats.
Fans of Elvis and 1960s pop-culture films will love Lisanti's books which can be found on many Amazon sites! (News, Source: Amazon; ElvisInfoNet)

Elvis Scores A Brand New UK Top 10 Album: Forbes reported.. Elvis Presley hasn’t recorded music in more than half a century.
Despite that fact, the legendary musician’s estate has been releasing new albums for decades. The Presley camp continues to dole out updated reworkings, live recordings, and special collections, and the rocker’s fan base never seems to fail to snap them up.
On last week’s U.K. charts, Presley debuted his latest posthumous release MEMPHIS inside the top 10 on a pair of tallies. The set became an instant bestseller, which is par for the course when it comes to one of the most successful artists to ever live.
Presley’s 'Memphis' debuted at No.5 on both the Official Albums Sales and Official Physical Albums charts in the U.K.
The project was clearly a strong seller after its release, with purchases on some physical format seemingly being responsible for the title’s immediate success. Memphis nearly entered the top 10 on one more tally, though it missed out on doing so by just a single space. Elvis launched on the Official Vinyl Albums ranking at No. 11 this frame.
The set also reached the main albums chart with Memphis at #83 on the list of most-consumed EPs and full-lengths in the country.
Memphis was recently released as a must-have for longtime collectors of all things connected to Presley. The set features an incredible 111 songs, with 88 of those being newly mixed.
As Memphis performs well upon its arrival, Presley fills several spaces on other U.K. charts as well.
He even manages to double up on the albums chart in the country, as 'Elv1s:30#1 Hits' returns to the top 40, lifting from No41 to No. 40. (News Source;Forbes/EIN)
'Missouri Woman Arrested For Graceland Scam': A Missouri woman was arrested on August 16 (rather neat timing!) and charged with the brazen scheme to defraud Elvis Presley's family by trying to auction off Graceland.
Lisa Jeanine Findley falsely claimed Lisa Marie Presley borrowed $US3.8 million from a bogus private lender and had pledged Graceland as collateral for the loan before her death last year.
The 53-year-old then threatened to sell Graceland to the highest bidder if Presley's family didn't pay a $US2.85 million settlement, according to authorities.
Ms Findley posed as three different people allegedly involved with the fake lender, fabricated loan documents, and published a fraudulent foreclosure notice in a Memphis newspaper announcing the auction of Graceland in May.
In early May, a public notice was issued for the foreclosure sale of the five-hectare estate in Memphis.
A judge stopped the sale after Riley Keough filed a legal complaint against a private investment firm. "Lisa Maria Presley never borrowed money from Naussany Investments and never gave a deed of trust to Naussany Investments," Ms Keough's lawyer wrote in a lawsuit.
Ms Keough inherited the trust and ownership of the home after the death of her mother.
Experts were baffled by the attempt to sell off one of the most storied pieces of real estate in the country using names, emails and documents that were quickly suspected to be phoney.
The announcement of charges came on the 47th anniversary of Presley's death at the age of 42.
US Postal Criminal Investigations Group Inspector Eric Shen said Ms Findley attempted to steal what "rightfully belongs to the Presley family for her personal gain. She took advantage of the very public and tragic occurrences in the Presley family as an opportunity to prey on the name and financial status of the heirs to the Graceland estate."
She has been charged with aggravated identity theft and mail fraud, the later of which carries a punishment of up to 20 years in prison.
Ms Findley remained in custody after a brief federal court appearance in Missouri, according to court papers.
After the scheme fell apart, Ms Findley tried to make it look like the person responsible was a Nigerian identity thief, prosecutors said. (News, Source;ABC/EIN)

Mini-Review 'Mike Stone: My Time with Priscilla & Lisa Marie Presley': Mike Stone's interesting memoir is now available in softcover (224 pages) and Kindle (176 print pages) formats from Amazon sites.
The book (by Mike Stone with Blake Chavez) is easy to read and it is pleasing to finally have his account of what happened.
Stone's account of his relationship with Priscilla Presley is honest and how long they were involved before Priscilla told Elvis she wanted a divorce will surprise many readers, as will an account of a phone conversation he had with Elvis.
He is also candid about Elvis' Memphis Mafia.
Stone speaks highly of Lisa Marie (who was the same age as his daughter, Shelley) and details how he declined a sizeable offer from Random House to write a "tell all" book about his relationship with Priscilla, including their sex life.
The author is also honest about his own insecurities and weaknesses.
Non-Presley related chapters in the book are the author's early years, rise to prominence in the martial arts world, Stone's poetry, and an intriguing look at his PenSword Artworks.
There is a photo section featuring numerous images of the author, Priscilla and Lisa Marie, as well as Stone's good friend Engelbert Humperdinck (who also wrote the Foreword to the book), Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris.
The book is slimline and a reasonably quick read - it would have benefitted by more stories from the author's far from ordinary life.

His workmates , Tommy (Alexander Morton) and Franny (Gavin Mitchell) mock him for being too soft with Rose.

'Conversations on Elvis': One of the real highlights of Elvis Week 2024 was 'Conversations on Elvis'.
Featured special guests were Jerome 'Stump' Monroe (drummer for Sweet Inspirations), Shirley Dieu, Larry Strickland, Larry Geller plus Linda Thompson and Sam Thompson.
The stories were all very touching and delightful with the conversations running an hour longer than expected.
Comments included, 'Stump' Monroe noted, "There will never be another Elvis. He was one of the kind"
Shirley Dieu talked about Elvis' generosity, his love of music including singing along to Freddy Fender and also how Elvis asked to have her Connie Francis album!
The ever-charming Larry Strickland talked about Elvis' love of gospel and his incredible generosity in buying The Stamps a tour bus.
he noted, "Elvis was a beautiful man inside and out.
Extremely generous to a fault.
He couldn't give enough...
He was an exceptional human being."
Larry Geller talked for close to an hour with amazing stories of the night that Elvis met The Beatles and how disappointed he was with his career at the time.
Also how after meeting The Beatles, Elvis was driving his mobile home back to Hollywood for yet another terrible movie and listening to Roy Orbison singing 'Only The Lonely' which all helped inspire Elvis to make his How Great Thou Art gospel album.
Linda Thompson explained how it was a lucky chance that she met Elvis in the first place, and how their favourite place together was the bedroom (but not for the reason you might imagine) "I saw the tender, little, sweet child inside Elvis."
Sam Thompson told the funny story of how Elvis' guns slipped down his trouser legs while getting off the Lisa Marie, clanging down the row of airline steps one by one to fall onto the tarmac at the feet of the Sheriff! (News, Source;EW/ElvisInfoNet)
Don't forget to check out EIN's previous interviews with these friends of Elvis - see below -
EPE Future Plans: For Elvis fans, the really interesting point was when Joel Weinshanker (majority owner of EPE) explained his future plans.
This included the following points
- EPE wants to bring back "the life" to Graceland of when Elvis lived there.
There has been too much sadness recently.
His idea is to only do new concepts that Elvis would do or approve of.
- EPE are going to be doing "something special"on the mansion grounds every few months. Some fans can participate in, some not.
- The new special tour 'Presley for a Day' will be unique and expensive, however a fair portion of the profits are going to charity & good things for the local community.
Part of this tour will be 'Moriah’s House' which was the stable and home for Lisa Marie’s horse. We’re starting with that house. Elvis’ legacy was Lisa. Elvis said, "The best thing I ever did in my life was have Lisa".
Now her daughter Riley has taken over and is extraordinary - and solely focused on what is best for Elvis’ legacy.
“Our Road to fifty” is the new plan as they head to the fiftieth anniversary. We have three years until 2027
- There will be three to four new buildings opened on the mansion property. EPE will be announcing these and they will be doing things that Elvis would have done.
Some of the things that Elvis designed himself.
- One could be a Recording Studio built on the property. This was something that Elvis not only always wanted, but he designed. In the archives there are architectural drawings for that. - There will be one new Elvis movie between now and 2027 - possibly two. - Baz Lurhman is working on his Elvis documentary.
There should also be a "streamer" show.
- There is the London ‘Elvis Evolution’ event where you’ll be able to go into virtual rooms that Elvis was in and interact with all of it.
- The whole thing is that in this world of such quick change, where movies and music are all so disposable, Elvis is one of the few things from 70 years ago that is still incredibly relevant.
Elvis was a revolutionary.
- So fans should “spread the gospel of Elvis”.
- Elvis always respected his neighbours even he might disagree with them. So please ignore the bad social media, respect your neighbours. Ask yourself, "What would Elvis do?"
-
So we are all going to keep going to Elevate Elvis’ legacy and keep thinking ‘What would Elvis want, what would Elvis do?’ EIN Note: photo shows Joel Weinshanker with Lisa Marie in 2018 (News, Source;EPE/ElvisInfoNet)

Larry Geller interviews with EIN: From 1964 until the very final days Larry Geller was a close friend to Elvis. Perhaps Elvis might have lived longer had he paid more attention to Geller's healthy life-style and managed to shake off the excessive demands of Colonel Parker. With the 30th Anniversary fast approaching Larry was kind enough to answer a lot of questions that fans have raised with EIN and to also tell us something about his new book. Larry Geller has multiple projects happening at this very moment, so EIN extends its sincere thanks to him for sparing us the time for this interview. (Source: EIN, June 2007)
Linda and Sam Thompson in Australia: EIN Vice-President Sanja Meegin shared some cocktails and quality time with Linda Thompson and her brother Sam Thompson at the 'Elvis Leaves His Mark: Now and Then' tour with Mark Andrew.
One of the most exciting experiences for any Elvis fan, is meeting someone from his inner circle – someone who was there right by his side for the highs and lows and the joys and pain that was part of Elvis’ incredible life.
16 August 2024 - 47 years ago today the world lost the greatest entertainer of all time.
"Elvis was God-given, there’s no other explanation. A Messiah comes around every few thousand years, and Elvis was it this time.”- Little Richard “I remember Elvis as a young man hanging around the Sun Studios. Even then, I knew this kid had a tremendous talent. He was a dynamic young boy. His phraseology, his way of looking at a song, was as unique as Sinatra’s. I was a tremendous fan and had Elvis lived, there would have been no end to his inventiveness.” - B.B. King

Dave Hebler at Elvis Week: Elvis’s former bodyguard, Dave Hebler, is in town for the first time in decades to share some of his fondest memories with the King of Rock 'n' Roll.
Hebler is hosting a series called “Memphian Memories with Dave Hebler” at Circuit Playhouse from Aug 12 through Friday, Aug. 16.
He will tell his stories about Elvis, meet with fans and answer their questions.
This week for the first time in 47 years Hebler walked into the Memphian Theater, now called the Circuit Playhouse.
Elvis spent countless late nights at the Memphian.
Hebler notes, "Some of what you think you know is sort of true, and some of it is flat out false.”
The Memphian was a very, very important part of Elvis' life.
I remember the Peter Sellers movies. Elvis liked that. Everybody sat behind him. Well, except for his girlfriend.”
Hebler is a 10th degree black belt in Kenpo Karate. He said using his skills to protect Elvis was no easy task.
"It was the worst job on the face of the planet. I mean, think about it. Everywhere we went, there were hundreds of love-starved women just doing their best to try to get next to Elvis."
Hebler said his time as a bodyguard and a personal Karate instructor for Elvis was a once in a lifetime experience though. "I have such great memories,” Hebler said.

Upcoming Netflix documentary about Elvis: Netflix is set to release a new documentary on Elvis Presley.
It will be helmed by Jason Hehir, best known for 2020's The Last Dance, a co-production between ESPN and Netflix and more recently, Murder in Boston: Roots, Rampage, and Reckoning for HBO.
Hehir’s 'Little Room Films' is behind the new documentary, which was acquired by Peter Chernin’s The North Road Company late last year.
Production on the doco has been ongoing since early 2023. The yet-to-be-titled documentary will focus on the legendary singer and actor using an abundance of archival footage detailing the life and career of the artist, who ultimately passed away at the age of 42.
Jason Hehir recently discussed working on the new documentary on an NPR podcast called Attribution with Bob McKinnon.
Speaking briefly about the upcoming documentary, Hehir said, “I’ve been fascinated with that guy Elvis my whole life because I know there’s a human being underneath that two-dimensional facade we see culturally. It’s always been an interest of mine.” The hour-long interview discussed many of the projects he’s worked on in the past, concluding with an insight into why he’s chosen Elvis Presley. His ultimate aim is to peel back the layers of well-known figures to reveal the deeper, often unseen, aspects of their lives. This method suggests that the Elvis doco will likely offer a fresh perspective focusing on the man behind the myth.
This is likely to be the "Netflix Elvis documentary series" mentioned by Darlene Love earlier in March this year where she was asked by "Priscilla Presley to participate in an Elvis Netflix series that will air "in the coming months".
All should be confirmed soon (News, Source: Netflix/ElvisInfoNet)
Is it Elvis? How important is vibrato?: Musician, Fil, from the group Wings of Pegasus, is well known for his online videos analysing various music recordings.
He has analysed several Elvis tracks and also songs alleged to be "unreleased" Elvis songs.
In this video, Fil picks apart, using his knowledge of Elvis' voice and the wonders of contemporary music technology, the song, Lonely in the Chapel from the 1966 film, The Wild Angels (starring Peter Fonda and Nancy Sinatra, and the genesis for Fonda's groundbreaking film, Easy Rider).
While his findings will not be surprising to those with a keen ear for Elvis' voice, Fil's analysis is mandatory viewing.
Watch on youtube - "Is THIS vocal performance from 1966 an UNCREDITED Elvis vocal?" EIN Comment: Songwriter/producer Mike Curb (perhaps best known for the hit song, Burning Bridges (featured in the Clint Eastwood movie, Kelly's Heroes) is credited with writing most of the soundtrack songs, including Lonely in the Chapel, for The Wild Angels.
Interestingly, another song on the film soundtrack is Rockin' Angel, written by Mike Curb, Davie Allan and Harley Hatcher. (Assuming it
is the same person), in 1980 Harley Hatcher wrote the intriguing (but incredulous) book, Elvis Is That You? A Remarkable Personal Experience.
The book was Hatcher's account of singing/recording with a fellow serviceman named John Crow, whom he met and sang with at Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey, in 1958.....the punch-line being that John Crow was Elvis. (News, Source: Wings of Pegasus/EIN)
(Book Review) Elvis, Hero of the Comic Books (Nigel Patterson): Respected Elvis author and reviewer, Gordon Minto, recently put on his reviewer’s cap to take on what he rightly describes as “a strange landscape” of how Elvis is portrayed in comic books (aka sequential art), a subject, which until now, has not been well covered or understood.
The book in question, Elvis, Hero of the Comic Books, was written by EIN’s Nigel Patterson and sublimely designed by Elvis Day By Day’s, Kees Mouwen.
The book includes stunning artwork from a number of releases and an eclectic variety of Elvis related comic book ephemera. Elvis, Hero of the Comic Books features more than 600 images!
Read Gordon’s detailed review to discover why he found the book to be “refreshingly different, extremely eye-catching, well-researched and well-written, while offering a new slant on things”.

'ELVIS Memphis' Mini Review: What better place to start with an insight into the new Elvis box-set than the 'Memphis Flyer' the weekly alternative newspaper serving the greater Memphis, Tennessee, area.
In the article, arts reporter Alex Greene discovers Elvis' Memphis soul.
The review's key points include.. 'The King’s Hometown Cuts' - New mixes from four eras of Elvis Presley recording in Memphis.
Having incorporated elements of Sun Studio, Phillips Recording Service, and Ardent Studios into the design of his own Southern Grooves studio, Matt Ross-Spang has an ear for history, so it’s no wonder that he’s become the go-to guy for mixing Elvis Presley.
Following a brief similar to that of the From Elvis In Nashville album, Ross-Spang has outdone himself on the new box set dropping for Elvis Week, a set of five CDs and/or two LPs produced by Ernst Jørgensen, collecting everything Presley recorded in his adopted hometown. (<EIN Note, this is not actually true since some material has been omitted.)
Working from digital copies of the original multitrack tapes offered him a glimpse into the recording techniques of a bygone age. “I was really excited to work on the Stax and American stuff simply because I’m a Memphis history nut, and to get to hear those multitracks was really exciting. Working with Chips Moman at American, Elvis had a new band, a new producer, a new studio - everything was new. And yet Chips didn’t have nice technologies like RCA [in Nashville]. He committed all that music to four tracks, typically. And oftentimes he recorded the reverb chamber right onto the track. Or put the bass and the acoustic guitar on the same track. So it was really cool for me to open that up and see how much commitment he had, the vision he had from the beginning.”
Those American recordings yielded hits like “In the Ghetto” and “Suspicious Minds” but the familiar versions, exploding with those distinctive string arrangements, are only hinted at here. The MEMPHIS tracks reveal what preceded those orchestral flourishes: The sure-footed, house band Moman had assembled, aka The Memphis Boys, both soulful and rocking, playing their hearts out while the voice of Elvis rang out in the room. As Robert Gordon writes in the extensive liner notes, the new mixes put us “standing next to Elvis inside the recording studio, us and the basic band, hearing what he’s hearing.”
Moreover, it’s a master class in minimalist songcraft, as one hears guitarist Reggie Young weave his lines in with those of keyboardists Bobby Woods and Bobby Emmons, the latter’s organ parts suggesting an orchestra, yet molded out of rawer sounds. Here and there are occasional overdubs, as in the remarkable “Don’t Cry, Daddy” where Presley harmonizes with himself. As Ross-Spang explains, “We left in some of the overdubs that they did on the spot there, but we didn’t use things that they went back to Nashville to do.”
Ross-Spang didn’t have to mix these tracks entirely on his own. “It was really fun to get to work with Robert Gordon on this. I was sending him mixes and he was sending me notes back. And then producer Rob Santos and Ernst. Sometimes I can treat a mix too technically and not emotionally, but Ernst would give me very nontypical, emotional mix notes.” As the singer’s raw emotion explodes from the speakers, MEMPHIS reveals Elvis to be one of the premier soul artists of his time.

How another artist fixed Elvis’ “A Little Less Conversation”: Elvis‘“A Little Less Conversation” is one of his most famous songs — now. It wasn’t nearly as famous when it came out during the 1960s. Another artist came and helped the song achieve its full potential. Despite that, he walked away from the scene that made “A Little Less Conversation” a huge success.
Elvis’ 1968 film Live a Little, Love a Little isn’t generally considered one of Elvis’ better star vehicles. It gave the world a better-than-average soundtrack single: “A Little Less Conversation.” The track has some fun, suggestive lyrics but its instrumental is not impressive. “A Little Less Conversation” was given a second life in 2002 when Junkie XL remixed it, changing its genre completely.
The 1960s version of “A Little Less Conversation” is a light rock ‘n’ roll song. Most of its power comes from Elvis’ vocals. When Junkie XL remade the song, he turned it into a dance song. The instrumental he crafted for it has the power and energy to match Elvis’ singing. It’s shocking that it took so long for someone to realize that Elvis’ powerhouse voice would work well in the context of modern dance music, which often incorporates his style of singing.
The original “A Little Less Conversation” has backing vocals, but they won’t make much of an impact. The Junkie XL remix took a page from later Elvis hits such as “Suspicious Minds” and really emphasized the backup singers. The result is an incredible dancefloor crowd-pleaser that still sounds great over 20 years later.
Rather than return to the realm of classic rock or dance music, Junkie XL decided to become a film composer after releasing his signature hit. During a 2018 interview with MusicRadar, Junkie XL explained his decision. “As far as hit singles go, this was about as big as it could get. Everybody around me was saying, ‘You gotta follow this up, you need another hit single. This is your time.'”
“I felt that I’d taken club music and electronic music as far as I could take it. So I shut down my Amsterdam studio, stuffed my laptop into a suitcase and moved to LA. All I could think about was being a film composer — that was my dream.” (News, Source: Matthew Trzcinski, cheatsheet.com)
When Elvis vs JXL was released and became a global sensation selling 4 million copies and reaching #1 in more than 20 countries, EIN had the distinction of being the only Elvis organisation to interview Tom Holkenberg aka Junkie XL: -

Reviews for the book include:
-- If you were raised on comic books as I was, and are a fan of Elvis, this convergence is a wonderful gift. Special attention has been given to the artwork and it shows, e.g. sharp pictures, clever arrangement on the pages, colorful accents. Some of the drawings are works of art from very talented artists. For me, it is not a book one reads in one sitting, but a book that needs to be savored like an old cognac, in small amounts, or like ice-tea or cold beer on scorching days, in little sips. There is too much to admire to speed through it.
In short, a magnificent volume which will enrich any bookshelf dedicated to Elvis books. –Paul Belard, author/researcher of The King & the Jester, Elvis The Humanitarian, Elvis The King of Bling and many more Elvis books
-- I highly recommend this book! – Emiel Maier, Elvis Presley News Report

This book was first published on August, 2017 during the 40th anniversary of Elvis' death! Keith Alverson first saw Elvis in concert in the early 70s when he secretly smuggled in his small pocket camera to sneak a few photos of Elvis from there he went from strength to strength. One his first Elvis' concerts where he was able to get quality photos of Elvis in concert was Elvis in Atlanta, July 1973 after which he saw Elvis over 80 times live on stage.
Alverson's outstanding photos of Elvis in his "Phoenix" jumpsuits are known by every Elvis fan. With 1,500 photos this book concentrating on Elvis from 1973-1975 has to be a real stunner. Even better the photos have been newly scanned straight from the original negatives.

London 'Direct From Graceland: Elvis' exhibition closing soon: Next month will be the last chance for fans of Rock’n’Roll to see Elvis artefacts at the London exhibition
The exhibition at the Arches London Bridge ends on September 1 - just after Elvis Week 2024 in Memphis.
The items on display at 'Direct From Graceland: Elvis' include his 'man box' that he kept in his bedroom, which has never been open to the public.
Many of the 400 items that have taken centre stage in the UK exhibition had never left Elvis’s Graceland mansion since his death more than four decades ago.
They were deemed so personal and precious that they were kept at the icon’s home in Memphis.
But secure in London the items on display include his “man box” that he kept in his bedroom at Graceland, which has never been open to the public.
It contains Elvis' aftershave, moisturiser, jewellery and black hair dye.
Graceland's Angie Marchese explains that this box was special to Elvis’ daughter, Lisa Marie since Lisa Marie would hold it during moments of grief after her father’s death in August 1977.
Also on show are the King’s prized Ferrari Dino GT4, his gold lamé suit worn in the 1950s, a gold-plated rotary dial phone from his upstairs bedroom, Lisa Marie’s baby clothes plus an array of jumpsuits and capes.
Angie explains, “Elvis still holds a quasi-religious significance for thousands of UK visitors, several years after his death.
It’s just amazing to see fans' reaction to some of the pieces. They cry, they laugh, they sing. There’s always a lot of tears.
They’re very emotional. They connect to Elvis as the person. They connect to his heart and to that little boy.
Each generation is introduced to Elvis in a whole different way and we want visitors to get a feeling for what it’s like to be in Elvis’ own world.
We wanted to make this exhibition personal and intimate – to give visitors an up close and personal feeling – like you’re really getting to know who Elvis is.”

(Upcoming book) 'The Occult Elvis: The Mystical and Magical Life of the King' (Miguel Conner): For those readers interested in “new age” themes, this “softcover” release from Destiny Books (Simon & Schuster) is scheduled for publication on April 8, 2025. The cover image is yet to be settled.
Containing 288 pages, the book is described as:
.. Draws on firsthand accounts from Elvis’s wife, Priscilla, his friends and family, the Memphis Mafia, and his spiritual advisors, looks at key teachers who influenced him, including Yogananda, H. P. Blavatsky, and Manly P. Hall. It examines Elvis’s efforts as a natural healer, the significance of his UFO encounters, and his telekinetic, psychic, and astral traveling abilities
- Writer and researcher Miguel Conner reveals how Elvis was a profound mystic, occultist, and shaman. Beginning with the unusual circumstances of his birth, including his stillborn twin brother, Jesse - Conner traces the diverse thread of mysticism that runs through Elvis Presley’s life, drawing on firsthand accounts from the people closest to him, including his wife, Priscilla, friends and family, the Memphis Mafia, and his spiritual advisors.
“The author reveals how Elvis was a student of seminal occultists, including H. P. Blavatsky, Manly P. Hall, G. I. Gurdjieff, and P. D. Ouspensky, as well as a devotee of Indian yogi Paramahansa Yogananda. He argues that Elvis was well-versed in esoteric practices including sex magic, meditation, astrology, and numerology and had a deep familiarity with Kabbalah, Gnosticism, Theosophy, and Eastern traditions. Conner also reveals how Elvis was a natural healer, telekinetic, psychic, and astral traveller who had significant mystical experiences and UFO encounters.
Looking at the conspiratorial and paranormal aspects of Elvis’s life, the author explores the “Elvis visitations” that have occurred since Presley’s ostensible death and the general high weirdness of Elvis’s life. As Conner convincingly argues, Elvis was not just a one-of-a-kind rock-and-roller. He was the greatest magician America ever produced and a key player in transforming Western culture forever.” (ISBN: 979-8888501351).
About the author: Miguel Conner is a writer, voiceover artist, and host of the popular podcast Aeon Byte Gnostic Radio. His books include Voices of Gnosticism, Stargazer, Heretic, and The Executioner’s Daughter. (News, Source: Simon & Schuster/NP/Amazon)
GWS Auctions refute Authenticity Claims: Following on from the GWS Elvis auction authenticity dispute (see story below) GWS Auctions has responded to the Weinshanker / EPE allegations that memorabilia belonging to Elvis was inauthentic.
They state that - Priscilla Presley was "very clear" about their authenticity.
They also allege that EPE / Graceland "authenticate certain lots for a fee"
GWS has been unfairly maligned, and its reputation harmed, while Brigitte Kruse "categorically denies any elder financial abuse" of Priscilla, 79, and "those allegations do not involve GWS."
The statement then explained that GWS received "letters of recollection" from Elvis' ex-wife regarding certain items from the Col. Tom Parker Collection, which "provided additional support and provenance, and GWS believed that they were of historical value to collectors."
"Ms. Presley's name was associated with the Col. Parker collection and because she was there in real time.
Additionally, Ms. Presley's name was inscribed on one of the pieces and she maintained a close relationship with Col. Parker up until the time of his passing, Ms. Presley's recollections about these pieces were very clear.
While experts can legitimately form different opinions regarding the authenticity of any item in any asset class, GWS stands behind everything that it sells, and categorically denies trafficking in fake or inauthentic items attributed to Elvis Presley."
Priscilla has not yet responded to the allegations. (News, Source;People/EIN)

‘For LP Fans Only’ ‘A Date With Elvis’ Mono II Stereo' CD review: From the RDM label,
"Two classic 1959 Elvis albums, for the first time in stereo". 'For LP Fans Only' brought together songs previously released on 45rpm or on EPs, such as the classics 'That's All Right', 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy', 'Mystery Train' or the song 'Poor Boy'. 'A Date with Elvis' was based on the same principle of compiling previously published 45rpm
or 'Extended Play' songs from Elvis' past. It contained other Elvis SUN
classics plus 'Baby, I Don't Care' and the haunting 'Is It So Strange'.
Looking back, these two 1959 albums were a strange compilation with their short running time and odd track selection..
The stereo mixes created by producer Anthony Stuchbury, are authentic to original Mono releases but now sound more like the original studio sessions. Featuring twenty fabulous 50's tracks, EIN's Piers Beagley checks out this intriguing Stereo compilation.. (CD Reviews, Source;ElvisInformationNetwork)
Graceland questions authenticity of Elvis memorabilia sold by auction house with ties to Priscilla!: NBC News has revealed some strange auction listings with some involving Priscilla letters of authenticity.
EPE's Joel Weinshanker has stated that he has concerns over Elvis items being sold by GWS Auctions.
When GWS auction house offered to sell one of Elvis’ black jackets, he became suspicious as the black grommet jacket was a one-of-a-kind item worn by Elvis in 1972 and that very jacket was hanging up in Graceland’s private collection.
GWS Auctions, the company behind the 2023 auction of the jacket, has made a name for itself by selling Elvis memorabilia. Its owner, Brigitte Kruse, formed a relationship with Elvis' ex-wife, Priscilla Presley, and has even acted as her power of attorney.
But the jacket was not an anomaly as Graceland is raising concerns about other items put up for auction, including a private jet and several pieces of jewelry.
Curiously some of the items were offered with a letter from Priscilla vouching for their authenticity, even though Elvis would have possessed them when they were no longer together.
Kruse’s relationship with Priscilla, 79, has since imploded.
Kruse filed a lawsuit last fall accusing Priscilla of cutting her out of lucrative deals after she came to Priscilla’s financial rescue. On Thursday, Priscilla filed a countersuit, accusing Kruse and three associates of conning her out of $1 million in a financial elder abuse scheme.
In a lengthy interview Kruse defended her auction sales, saying she “100%” stood by her Elvis items, and she questioned why Weinshanker would go to the media rather than raise issues with her directly.
The questions over some of Kruse’s Elvis items reflect the murky world of celebrity memorabilia. Fakes and forgeries flood the market, experts say, making it difficult for even the most experienced buyers to know what is genuine and what isn’t.
In the Elvis world, there are a handful of elite collectors who are sought out by potential buyers looking for assurances that a particular item is authentic. The problem, these collectors say, is that there are dishonest people with Elvis ties providing bogus items to auction houses.
Adding to the sometimes shady nature of the industry, some auction houses have a reputation for driving up bids on their own items and announcing phony sales to attract attention.
Kruse and Priscilla met in 2021. In her suit, Priscilla said they were introduced by a mutual connection who said Kruse wanted to discuss her business selling
Elvis memorabilia.
In the summer of 2022, Priscilla Presley did media interviews promoting a GWS auction featuring jewelry from the collection of Elvis’ longtime manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
Some of the items up for sale were said to be gifted by The King himself, including diamond-encrusted rings, watches and cufflinks. In the days before the auction, Priscilla did media interviews explaining why she was endorsing it.
Priscilla said, “I want fans and people who love Elvis to know it is authentic. There’s so much product out there that is not authentic at all and that worries me.”
At Graceland, Weinshanker and other staffers grew concerned about Priscilla’s involvement and the fact that the auction house was offering items with letters signed by her.
Weinshanker and other Elvis experts were especially concerned with Priscilla providing letters for items purchased outside of the years she and Elvis were together, as she might not know whether or not the items were genuine.
Kruse acknowledged that Graceland has access to extensive records but said it’s ridiculous to think that everything that came into Elvis’ possession would have been documented.
According to Kruse’s lawsuit, Priscilla was in dire financial straits by August 2022. To help her get out of debt, they created several companies to “exploit new income streams” and “monetize various aspects of Priscilla’s life,” the suit says.
Kruse was also named a co-trustee of Priscilla’s trust and was granted powers of attorney. But after setting up a company to capitalize on Priscilla’s name and likeness, Kruse found out that Priscilla had already sold the rights to another firm, according to the breach of contract lawsuit.
The suit, which seeks at least $50,000 in damages, portrayed Priscilla as a fading celebrity facing financial ruin due in part to her diminishing fame.
Priscilla’s lawyers have asked a judge to dismiss the suit, citing lack of jurisdiction. A decision is pending.

While there are books about how other celebrities (eg. The Beatles, Queen, David Bowie, Prince, Michael Jackson and Johnny Cash) have been celebrated in sequential art (comic books, graphic biographies, graphic novels, comic strips and caricatures), this week the first book to showcase Elvis' impact in this area was published.
Written by EIN's founding president, Nigel Patterson, it features outstanding page design by Elvis Day By Day's, Kees Mouwen.
While the original concept was a 150 page book, it has ended up being a mammoth 450 page "coffee table" release! There are more than 400 titles showcased with more than 600 images, including book covers, internal artwork, and an eclectic array of comic book ephemera.
Elvis, Hero of the Comic Books highlights how diverse and far-reaching Elvis' impact has been, the themes ranging from biography, superhero, teen interest, crime, and satire, to zombies, vampires, the supernatural, anthropomorphic Elvis, and even a Fairy godmother and Lady Hellvis (Lady Death).
The book also contains a detailed account of Elvis and Captain Marvel Jr., a 20-page "For Mature Readers Only" section, and a tribute to the "Grandfather of Elvis comic art", Ger Rijff.

Initial praise for Elvis, Hero of the Comic Books includes:
-- May I say: an absolute marvel of a book. Highly informative, insightful, colourful and fascinating to see all this all presented together. You don’t have to be into comics to enjoy this book. Highly recommended. "WOW! BOOM! POW!" - Rogier van Luyken, It's Elvis Time
-- This book has it all and for the art loving Elvis fans it's just as essential as an Elvis record guide. I give it 5 stars out of 5 and that's including the awesome design of the book. A winner and an absolute delight! - Gerrit de Jong, author of Elvis Hero of the Comic Book and Elvis Still the Hero of the Comic Book
In addition the book features various sidebars, which present a more detailed account of a particular title or issue.

As a body of work, the comic books, graphic novels and biographies represent a powerful symbol of the incredible impact Elvis continues to have on society and culture..
Friday 5 July 2024 - - - 70 years ago today Elvis' "That's All Right" changed the world - - -
"That's All Right" 70 Anniversary Spotlight: Seventy years ago today Elvis Presley would walk into 706 Union Avenue and by the end of the evening his recording of 'That's All Right' would change the course of music history.
Elvis author Tony Plews' 'Walk A Lonely Street' is a unique book that tells the tale of Elvis Presley’s rise to fame and presented as a series of consecutive short stories, it offers a new perspective on Presley’s musical and cultural achievements.
Every Elvis biography has, of course, described the recording of “That's All Right” but none have really captured that special day in such a cool, inspiring, involving and natural way.
In 'Walk A Lonely Street' it’s as if Tony Plews was actually there watching... On this 70th anniversary every Elvis fan should read this fabulous spotlight about 'That's All Right'.

'Randy Starr, Presley Style: Lost Elvis Demos' CD Review: Between 1963 and 1968 Randy Starr wrote and produced around 70 songs and 35 of these demos can be found on this CD.
The extensive booklet contains detailed liner notes by British Elvis expert and collector Trevor Simpson, based on interviews he recently conducted with Randy Starr.
This CD features 35 professional demos, yet only six of these are songs that Elvis recorded, ‘Kissin’ Cousins’, ‘The Yellow Rose of Texas’, ‘Look Out Broadway’, ‘Datin'’, ‘Adam and Evil’ and ‘The Girl I Never Loved’.
Previous compilations showcasing Elvis’ other collaborators such as Leiber / Stoller or Tepper / Bennett all celebrated their success in getting their songs recorded by Elvis - whereas this intriguing compilation tells the differing story of supplying endless demos with most of them being rejected. And that provides some of the interest to this release. EIN's Piers Beagley wonders if you can discover anything new from these pile of demos

'Las Vegas: On Stage Feb 1973' MRS CD Review: The new MRS 4CD Deluxe-set contains three performances recorded in February 1973, during Elvis’ eighth engagement in Las Vegas.

All shows are presented in stereo for the first time ever.
A bonus CD of remastered rehearsal tracks that were recorded the day before Opening night is also included.
The accompanying booklet includes rare photographs, memorabilia and liner notes which set the scene.
... This latest release from the Memphis Recording Service is an interesting one and manages to shed new light on the post-Aloha Elvis Las Vegas season that many fans have largely dismissed.
'ELVIS: MEMPHIS': The 5CD box-set is the first fully comprehensive collection of Elvis Presley’s hometown recordings.
Over 111 tracks ‘MEMPHIS’ captures Presley from his earliest sessions at Sun Studio to his final recordings in Graceland’s Jungle Room. Along the way, the Bluff City serves as both home and muse to Presley, playing a pivotal role in the dramatic arc of his artistry as he finds creative rebirth at American Sound in 1969, overcomes personal struggles at Stax in 1973, and brings his most extravagant and spellbinding live show to the Mid-South Coliseum in 1974.
Produced by Ernst Jørgensen with rare material and new liner notes by GRAMMY-winning music historian Robert Gordon, ‘MEMPHIS’ (released in 5CD, 2LP plus digital) gives fresh insight into the bond between Elvis and his eternal home.
From the very first notes of ‘MEMPHIS’ the city’s immense influence on Elvis is clear. At Sun Studio he channeled a heady mix of Beale Street blues, the sounds of Dewey Phillips’ “Red, Hot & Blue” show WHBQ, and the all-night gospel performances he attended at nearby Ellis Auditorium. That distinctly Memphis blend would result in a singular, defining moment in the development of rock n roll.
When Elvis returned to recording in Memphis in 1969, nearly fifteen years later, he sensed a different pulse in the city. Teaming up with legendary producer Chips Moman at American Sound Studio, far from the glitz of Hollywood or the gloss of Nashville, Elvis sought out songs that reflected a more gimlet-eyed worldview, and put down some of the greatest performances of his career. Yielding indelible hits like “In The Ghetto” and “Suspicious Minds,” these sessions heralded an earthier sound - and an astonishing comeback for Presley.
With the exception of the Sun recordings, all tracks on ‘MEMPHIS’ were newly mixed by GRAMMY-winner Matt Ross-Spang at Southern Grooves Memphis, with overdubs stripped away - to reveal only what Elvis heard live in the studio.(Please Watch this great video>>)
With this intimacy, new revelations abound - from Elvis’ intuitive chemistry with “The Memphis Boys” at American, to the subtle way he builds his vocal phrasing around his backing singers at Stax or the palpable joy he brings to his final sessions in the Jungle Room. Through it all, the listener is standing next to Elvis - hearing exactly what he is hearing.
The STAX sessions of 1973 came during a tumultuous time in Elvis’ personal life. As he wrestled with the dissolution of his marriage and personal demons, the frenetic energy of his day-to-day life came through in the performances. On songs like “Promised Land” that energy radiates, while other selections like Tony Joe White’s “For Ol’ Times Sake” grapple with loneliness in the face of fresh heartbreak. Presley returned to Stax in December of that year revitalized, clearly connecting to material like “I Got A Feeling In My Body” and “Loving Arms” with a familiarly-electric charisma.
In 1974 Elvis was back home On-Stage with a full orchestra and more than 20 musicians accompanying him. Here, he performed songs by many early rock & roll legends - including Jerry Lee Lewis, Lloyd Price, Little Richard and Fats Domino - and also delivered a GRAMMY-winning rendition of “How Great Thou Art.” “It’s always been said that a person cannot return to their hometown,” Elvis says towards the end of the show. “But you have disproven that theory completely.”
Recording his final songs using RCA’s mobile rig at Graceland in 1976, Elvis sings with a passion that defies his poor health.
These stripped recordings strike an emotional chord as he interacts beautifully with his backing vocalists on “Danny Boy” or finds a deep pocket on the swinging “For The Heart.”
In 1960 when asked what he missed about his hometown on his way back from the army, a 25-year-old Elvis answered: “Everything. I mean that - everything.”

MRS 'Elvis: The Complete Movie Masters 1960-62' In-Depth Review: This 2024 MRS 'Elvis: The Complete Movie Masters 1960-62 - Plus Session Out-takes' 4CD/Book combo pays tribute to Elvis Presley’s complete master soundtrack recordings made for his movies between 1960-62.
As a bonus two CDs contain rare outtake tracks from these recording sessions and do include unreleased material.
The 140-page book focuses on each of the seven films and is accompanied by informative text, complemented by rare and previously unseen photographs and memorabilia.
In his first two years out of the army Elvis still looked terrific and the book includes a veritable pot-pourii of attractive images for readers to savor.
The set includes the STEREO masters from 'Follow That Dream' that have never been officially released on album, as well as other previously unreleased remastered stereo recordings.
Collectors will not only enjoy the images of Elvis in gorgeous close-up but also nearly five hours of great sixties soundtrack music.
'Elvis Presley: Guitar Man: The '67 / '68 Sessions' FTD: More info on the 'Elvis Presley: Guitar Man The '67 / '68 Sessions'.
Released as a 5CD set it features two Elvis' RCA sessions at Studio B in Nashville.
September 1967 highlights include Guitar Man, Hi Heel Sneakers, Big Boss Man and You Don't Know Me.
The January 68 sessions highlights include Too Much Monkey Business and U.S. Male. It also included an extraordinary 30 takes of 'Goin' Home'.
The 24-page booklet features rare photos, sessions data, memorabilia and release information.
FTD suggest it will be out in late June See 'Elvis FTD / SONY CD News' for a detailed look at the package and a list of what previously unreleased content it contains.
'Celluloid Sell-Out 1960-61' New FTD book: FTD also announces a new deluxe book by Bob Pakes for July.
This time a follow up to his earlier FTD book 'Celluloid Sell-Out 1956-1958'.
448 pages containing over 2000 images - featuring worldwide Elvis Presley movie memorabilia from 1960-1961. Packed with movie posters, lobby cards and more.
Also includes two cds of movie soundtrack outtakes (all previously released)
'Elvis: Stateline SAHARA '74' FTD In-Depth Review:'ELVIS: Stateline Sahara 1974 Lake Tahoe' released as a 3-CD 5” digi-pak
features three previously unreleased performances from Elvis' third
Lake Tahoe season -
May 19 (Evening show), May 20 (Midnight show) and May 25 (Midnight show).
Just two weeks before this Lake Tahoe season Elvis had been playing to audiences of over 18 thousand at the Los Angeles Forum, so it is understandable if Elvis sounds a little more on ‘cruise-control’ but being less O-T-T is also a positive in that they sound more intimate.
'Elvis UK - Extended' In-Depth Book Review: UK specialists John Townson and Gordon Minto's new book 'ELVIS UK Extended - The Ultimate Guide to the Elvis Presley's EPs 1957 - 2001' follows on from their previous publications in the Elvis UK series.
The 500 page soft-cover book, extensively illustrated, details the history of Elvis' Extended Play releases, their popularity and subsequent fall from favour.
It includes a chronological list of all the EPs their multiple repressings and all are cross-referenced with its US counterpart and key differences discussed.
Based on 40+ years of research, and with contributions by insiders providing previously unknown perspectives and knowledge on the production, marketing, musical and other aspects of Elvis' UK EP releases.
But can there really be anything new of particular interest in a book about Elvis’ vinyl UK EP releases? Many of us believed they started with the ‘Love Me Tender’ EP and wrapped by 1967 with ‘Easy Come Easy Go’.
That’s only 20 or so EP releases and surely some like ‘Elvis Sails’ or ‘Elvis Sings Christmas Songs’ would only get one original print run and then be deleted.
We thought that this smaller UK vinyl theme would be done and dusted in under 100 pages – “mah boy, mah boy” were we wrong!
.. and the book will make you want to spin some vinyl! The incredible trio Nigel Patterson / Piers Beagley and Kees Mouwen (Elvis Day by Day) combine forces to check out the book. (Book Review, Source:EIN/ElvisDayByDay)
Interview with authors of 'ELVIS UK - Extended': Co-authors John Townson and Gordon Minto recently published 'ELVIS UK Extended - The Ultimate Guide to the Elvis Presley's EPs 1957 - 2001'.
The book, extensively illustrated, details the history of Elvis' Extended Play releases, their popularity and subsequent fall from favour.
It includes a chronological list of all the EPs their multiple repressings and all are cross-referenced with its US counterpart and key differences discussed.
Based on 40+ years of research, and with contributions by insiders providing previously unknown perspectives and background knowledge on the production, marketing, musical and other aspects of "just" 22 original Extended Play's and 3 EP box-sets, this impressive book is the definitive word on Elvis' UK EP releases.
'The Blue Hawaii Sessions' Box-Set FTD In-Depth Review: Released last month, 'The Blue Hawaii Sessions' was the eleventh in FTD’s “complete sessions” packages. This is the audio-set that was released earlier as part of 'The Making Of Blue Hawaii'. The 8 inch deluxe 4-CD package includes the complete sessions "newly-mixed from the original 3-track tapes", a 24-page booklet with informative flashbacks from musicians, songwriters, session data, memorabilia and global chart information.
The set includes 50 'officially previously unreleased' session outtakes. However most of these have to be 'False-Starts'.
There is however over four hours of Polynesian influenced material to enjoy and lots of studio banter to eavesdrop on. The set also includes all twenty-nine takes of Elvis' classic chart-topper Can’t Help Falling In Love.
Elvis in Literature #4 - 'Elvis, Barbra, A Star Is Born, and a girl circling overhead': That Elvis was considered for the co-lead role in A Star Is Born, starring Barbra Streisand, has long been a discussion point among fans. Why didn't Elvis take up the offer? Could he have carried it off?
Ms Streisand recently released her autobiography, My Name is Barbra (Century Books), a mammoth book of nearly 1,000 pages (but unfortunately no index)!!
Streisand's account of discussions with Elvis and Colonel Tom Parker about the role of John Norman Howard is interesting - and her description of meeting Elvis also includes a fascinating and somewhat bizarre account of why Elvis was late in meeting up with her.
'ELVIS: At 3am Sahara Tahoe 1973' MRS CD Review: This Deluxe 2CD set features two shows from Elvis’ May 1973 engagement at The Sahara Tahoe in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Included is a rare 3am charity performance as well as the midnight show from the previous night. Both shows for the first time are presented in stereo.
The accompanying booklet includes memorabilia and rare photos along with liner notes that set the scene.
Despite having to perform three concerts in the one evening, Elvis was feeling inspired and although it was 3am he still treated the ‘Mother’s Day’ benefit more like a Closing Night performance. Elvis was in extremely jovial spirits, teasing the band and adding some crazy lyrics. He also added unique live versions of ‘My Way’, ‘Faded Love’, ‘Funny How Time Slips Away’ and a rare ‘It’s Over’.
With the cassette hiss removed, the musicians and backing-vocals in stereo and Elvis’ vocal raised to the correct level, this MRS release sounds just like an RCA recorded multi-track and is the best representation of the “real Elvis” live in 1973 that fans could hope for. Go here as EIN's Piers Beagley checks out a sensational STEREO Elvis double-pack. (CD Reviews, Source;ElvisInformationNetwork)
Book Review- 'ELVIS : ALOHA FROM HAWAII - Through The Eyes of Japan': The book is 200 pages and features over 300 photos by Japanese
cameraman Yoshiji Kizaki, newly scanned from long-lost negatives. The
book features five main chapters focusing on four 1972 Elvis
appearances, November 17 1972 Evening Show, Nov 18 A/S and E/S, the Nov
20 Press Conference plus the Aloha main concert.
A lot of Kizaki's colour images are very impressive and so it is no surprise to learn that several of these photographs were used on Japanese vinyl album sleeves. There are some absolute beauties and the delight is that you will have never seen them before!
While this is obviously a photo book it is much more than that and the matching text makes it feel like a very personal journey. This book is actually about how the Japanese team witnessed some of Elvis' greatest performances and became a crucial part in Elvis' most famous live broadcast.
I have seen so few November 1972 on-stage photos before but here we get around fifty images from every concert.
In ‘Elvis A Life in Music’ Ernst Jorgensen wrote “By the end of 1972 Elvis was definitely overweight” so it is a surprise that these images show Elvis looking taught and terrific. In fact several from his November 17 concert could easily be mistaken for his iconic Aloha performance! See EIN's Piers Beagley detailed review

Book Review 'The King and The Jester': Elvis author Paul Belard's new "special interest" book all about Elvis and manager Col Parker is out now.
The cover notes, "As this uncultured philistine said of himself, "I did not know what to make of Elvis, or his music. I did not care, but I saw the reaction of the audience says and it was enough for me".Parker promptly realised that Elvis was his own ticket to wealth."
Belard's new 260 page book's twenty three chapters include, 'The Hank Snow Affair', 'The Snowman', 'The Lost Years', 'The Narcissist', 'World Wide Tour', 'What Could Have Been' and 'Exposing The Con Man'.
The author makes his disdain for Parker known from the outset and he does not hold back about what he sees as one of, if not the biggest, travesties and examples of unscrupulous mismanagement, in show business history!
The book is a very strong read and one that is very much a counterpoint to the recently published "rose colored glasses" account, 'Elvis and the Colonel: An Insider's Look At The Most Legendary Partnership In Show Business', by Parker employee Greg McDonald and Marshall Terrill.
Some fans have suggested that Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 ELVIS drama made Parker out to be too much of a cartoon villain but after reading this book the movie looks even more truthful than fans might have believed. ... NOW UPDATED (Film Review) Priscilla – film by Sofia Coppola: While Baz Luhrmann’s major hit film in 2022, Elvis, was a colorful narrative and frenetic musical explosion, in 2023, Sofia Coppola’s, Priscilla, is more subdued, but still a colorfully hued and musically expressive story.
Coppola is an acclaimed filmmaker and director. Thematically, her films explore themes of identity, isolation, and the complexities of human relationships, and these underscore, Priscilla.
EIN’s Nigel Patterson recently watched the film that has divided the Elvis world.

We have had plenty of general negative feedback but also some lengthy and rather interesting discussions on the film.. EIN is also interested in hearing YOUR comments on the movie. (Film Review, Source:ElvisInformationNetwork)

UPDATED- CD Review 'The Joan Deary Tapes Vol1' - and has Ernst won the war?’: Two years ago EIN posted an article suggesting that the Elvis bootleg era was over, that FTD and Ernst Jorgensen had truly won the war.
So it was a surprise to many that a new bootleg label ‘Joan Deary Inc’ suddenly popped up two months ago promising a very similar series of releases to the Madison ‘A Legendary Performer’ set.
They promised "Unique content... with never issued before outtakes. Some very different mixes among other glorious sounding tracks. Every track comes in great sound quality and has been remastered for optimal listening pleasure..."
EIN was suspicious from the start - to be honest I saw no need to purchase this CD - but several EIN readers wanted to know more before they put down their hard earned cash. Go here as EIN's Piers Beagley investigates to see if there is life in this new series of Elvis bootleg releases... Please read this before ordering we've done the work so that you don't have to! 'ELVIS: Closing Night 1972' MRS CD Review: This MRS 2CD set features a live performance recorded on 4 September 1972,during the last night of Elvis’ seventh engagement in Las Vegas at the
Hilton Hotel.
The show is presented in stereo. A bonus CD of remastered rehearsal tracks, recorded days before the engagement began, is also included.
While Elvis is perhaps not as full-blast as on the 'Opening Night' here MRS's 'Studio D' engineer has done some brilliant audio remastering,
removing the bad cassette-tape-hiss of all previous releases. Emphasising the instrumentation with this "Stereo remaster" not only elevates Elvis and the musicians' performance but also places the listener right into the audience.
This night Elvis rocked into 'Johnny B. Goode' and even performed the golden-oldies with some real respect. It's a great show. Go here as EIN's Piers Beagley discovers something new in this re-release - the near perfect bookend to MRS' examination of Elvis’ 1972 Summer Festival.

Elvis in Literature #3 – ''Elvis's Man Friday' by Gene Smith: Continuing EIN’s occasional series of interesting and (hopefully) thought-provoking Elvis excerpts (references/discussions) found in general literature. Elvis's Man Friday by Elvis' first-cousin Gene Smith is an often forgotten "insider" memoir.
Elvis and Gene were very close from a young age, and Gene later became a prominent member of Elvis' Memphis Mafia.
In his book, published in hardcover (with dust jacket) in 1994, Gene recounted his time with Elvis in linear fashion, in what was a very readable, entertaining and informative release.
In particular, the reader is informed about a number of unusual things and Elvis' idiosyncrasies.
EIN wonders how many readers knew that Elvis and Gene had (for a while) their own secret language?...
'Elvis Forever 2023':Where were you when Elvis died? What were you doing? Throughout our lifetimes there are very few dates that resonate with such clarity.
While some key historical events such as 9/11 or the Boxing day 2004 Tsunami are remembered, other unique moments are lost as vague memories.
The day of Elvis' death I was recording a "best of Elvis" cassette for my best friend.
A lightning storm was raging through London, the rain pouring down outside when my Mother called upstairs, "Have you heard, Elvis Presley has died?" -
A moment never forgotten.
... I can guarantee you one thing: we will never again agree on anything as we agreed on Elvis.
The newspapers the next day told the story. Go here to EIN's 'Elvis Forever 2023' for emotional reminiscences and also those traumatic news headlines ...
The world would remember, everything would change, but in 2023 Elvis' legacy still lives on.. (Spotlight, Source;ElvisInformationNetwork)
'Elvis On Tour' Box-Set In-Depth Review:The January 2023 'Elvis On Tour' SONY release is a 6CD / 1 Blu-Ray box set comprised of the audio from four of the shows (and two rehearsals) that were part of Elvis’ 1972 North American tour.
Originally recorded for the Elvis On Tour concert film that was released later that year, the set features a total of 145 tracks, including 91 previously unreleased tracks, as well as the award-winning concert film on Blu-ray.
RCA/Legacy's Elvis On Tour box set is produced by Ernst Jørgensen and mixed by Grammy Award-winning Memphis-based producer Matt Ross-Spang.
Elvis' April 1972 concerts were magnificent, so hopefully this expensive 50th anniversary release including newly remastered concert performances captures the magnificence and excitement of the movie and Elvis' stunning shows.
After fifty years surely SONY/RCA will get it right.....
'The Elvis RCA Camden Collection' EIN Spotlight:Most fans have had a love-hate relationship with Elvis' Camden collections. On one hand they are seen as an artistic misstep being released at a time when Elvis was back riding high on the charts saturating the market with a series of albums containing little-known songs. Yet on the other hand many younger fans used these budget collections as a way to enter the amazing world of Elvis’ vast back-catalogue.
The RCA Camdens featured the first release of an Elvis live recording, 19 previously unreleasedtracks and 58 tracks previously unreleased on an album. That is quite impressive even if Col Parker only had his increased revenue as the main goal.

(Book Review) Elvis Live At The International 50th Anniversary Edition (Kieran Davis): In 2011, Kieran Davis released the highly praised book, Elvis Live At The International. In 2022, he has published an expanded 50th Anniversary edition…and what an expansion it is!
The latest edition dwarfs the original with 432 pages compared to 172 in the original release.
And the added 250+ pages of additional material is stunning, making the 50th Anniversary release one of the best Elvis books published in 2022.
As its title reflects, the book covers Elvis' appearances at the International Hotel in Las Vegas between 1969 and 1971 (it was renamed the Las Vegas Hilton in July 1971). The narrative element is significantly based around fan, Peggy Elzea’s copious diaries, and a bumper array of archival material. Peggy’s experience seeing Elvis in Las Vegas is one every fan will envy. There is so much fascinating information and so many striking images in the book that it is hard to know where to start in describing it...

'What was Elvis searching for?' EIN Spotlight: The question is raised – but never answered – in the title of HBO’s recent absorbing, imperfect documentary 'Elvis Presley: The Searcher'.
At the start it seems clear what the teenage Elvis was searching for – an escape from the oblivion of poverty in the American South. Yet his quest was cultural as well as financial.
Later Elvis read obsessively, seeking out such books as The Impersonal Life, Joseph Brenner’s guide to self-discovery and Kahil Gibran’s book of fables, The Prophet. In his copy of Gibran’s tome, Elvis jotted down the line: “A singer can sing his songs but he must have an ear to receive the song”.
So what exactly was Elvis searching for? In this fascinating EIN Spotlight respected author Paul Simpson takes a close look at this all important question which, for some reason, was basically ignored in the recent HBO documentary..
Mindi Miller Interview with EIN: Mindi Miller was a working actress when she met Elvis in early 1975. She was interested in karate (she performed all her own movie stunts), exploring spirituality and the Bible and so they had a lot in common. Mindi Miller and Elvis bonded over their common interests and soon afterwards he asked her to go on tour with him in April 1975.
She stayed friends with Elvis through the years - along with members of the 'Memphis Mafia' - and attended his funeral.
EIN's Sanja Meegin recently caught up with Mindi Miller to talk about her close friendship with Elvis over the years.
In this fascinating interview she discusses. . . - Her first night with Elvis
- How Elvis persuaded her to cancel her overseas movie & modelling plans
- Their mutual interest in Karate
- Graceland and meeting Lisa Marie
- Attending Elvis' funeral . . . and much much more... Go here for EIN's Sanja Meegin and her intimate and detailed discussion with the delightful Mindi Miller - Now with Reader Feedback.
'Marty Lacker: A Life Well-Lived' & Elvis at American Studio's Interview: It was with immense sadness that last month EIN had to report on the death of our great friend - and a true friend to Elvis - Marty Lacker. We will miss him dearly. Marty is well-known as one of the key members of the Memphis Mafia and also co-Best Man at Elvis' wedding. He was known for both his honesty and being forthright with his opinions. He was the only member of the Memphis Mafia who still watched and commented on recent Elvis News. He had no issue with holding people to account (especially ones who would inflate their importance within Elvis' legacy) and would regularly ask EIN to add his comments or to correct any inaccuracy. Elvis fans often ask about Marty Lacker's background, how he came to meet Elvis, as well as his involvement in the music industry outside of working for The King.
As a prelude to Ken Sharp's fascinating interview with Marty Lacker and a discussion about Elvis' famous American Studio' Memphis sessions, EIN presents "Marty Lacker: a life well-lived" in which Marty tells of his life in the music industry, his friendship with Elvis along with his dislike of the over-controlling Col Parker. Go here to learn all you need to know about Marty Lacker as well as Elvis outstanding Memphis American Sound sessions in 1969. (Spotlight; Source,KenSharp/ElvisInformationNetwork)

The book was authored and designed by Keith Flynn with input from a large number of other Elvis specialists including EIN's Piers Beagley, EM&HM's Trevor Cajiao, Geoffrey McDonnell, Gordon Minto and many others. Paul Dowling EIN Interview Part Three: Paul Dowling is without doubt one of the major names in the Elvis World. He started collecting and selling Elvis vinyl over 40 years ago and has one of the world's largest Elvis Presley record collections. He started his "WorldWide Elvis" shop back in the seventies, way before the internet, where fans could get hold of rare Elvis records and memorabilia.
With such a fascination with Elvis, Dowling not only became a big name in the early years of Elvis bootlegs but later became friends with Ernst Jorgensen and helped RCA with various official releases.
In the final part of our fascinating interview Paul Dowling discusses .... - Dodging the FBI agents that were sent after him
- Unreleased Elvis material that still hasn’t come out
- Why does Ernst Jorgensen doubt this claims
- His BMG project 'For The First Time Ever' - what happened
- The true story of obtaining the Million Dollar Quartet tape
- His thoughts on Paul Lichter, Sean Saver, Sherif Hanna, Rex Martin
- Spending time with Alan Fortas
- Jim Curtin, newly added story

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage! The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
Go here to our detailed 'TIGER MAN' spotlight as EIN's Piers Beagley puts in the hard yards to check the facts from the fantasy . (Spotlight; Source;ElvisInfoNetwork)
