Sunday & Monday 1 & 2nd January 2012 - - HAPPY NEW YEAR to all our readers

'Promised Land' FTD CD Review: The long-awaited double-CD "Classic Album" version of 1974's 'Promised Land' album. Recorded in December 1973 at Stax Records in Memphis, the original album was released in 1974 and is thought by some to be the best Elvis studio album from the 1970s.
The title track, "Promised Land" was a cover of a 1965 hit by Chuck Berry and was issued as a single and hit number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and landed in the UK top ten.
Unlike the previous STAX classic albums, this time FTD present us with a second disc as "The Making Of" this wonderful album - in a similar style to the FTD ‘Let Yourself Go’ being ‘The Making Of’ the Comeback Special. This means lots of studio interaction and banter as Elvis and the band work-through to the final Masters – and it is a real delight.

‘Elvis Country’ Legacy Edition: OUT TODAY January 2nd the UK 'Elvis Country' Legacy release.
Presley biographer Peter Guralnick wrote, "Elvis has come out with a record which gives us some of the very finest and most affecting music since he first recorded for Sun almost 17 years ago." Ernst Jorgensen wrote about the session, "Elvis seemed inspired, singing with a passion and soulfulness that recalled Memphis, the band fell in with equal feeling, their confidence and expressiveness growing along with his. Both singer and band were performing out of genre, improvising their own rhythms and phrasing on the spot, challenging each other." To paraphrase Jorgensen, "they had something to be proud of."

Sunday 25 December 2011 Wishing everyone a HAPPY CHRISTMAS

Elvis Country Legacy Edition – 14 days until its release!: In January 1971, Elvis was well and truly back and on top of his game. During 1970, he chalked up no less than 4 Platinum and 3 Gold album awards and 5 Gold singles. As if this sales achievement wasn't enough, on January 16, he was given the award as one of the "Top Ten Young Men of The Year" by the United States Jaycees. His new album Elvis Country released that same month received critical acclaim.

In an outstanding review for Rolling Stone, biographer Peter Guralnick said: "... Elvis Presley has come out with a record which gives us some of the very finest and most affecting music since he first recorded for Sun almost 17 years ago."

Elvis Country is, obviously, a return to roots. But it's the singing, the passion and engagement most of all which mark this album as something truly exceptional. All the familiar virtues are there. The intensity. That peculiar combination of hypertension and soul.

There is even, for those who care to recall, a frenzied recollection of what the rock era once was, as Elvis takes on Jerry Lee Lewis' masterful "Whole Lot-ta Shakin' Goin' On" and comes out relatively unscathed. He has never sung better.

Elvis Country received an RIAA Gold certification and spent 21 weeks on the Billboard album chart. The single "I Really Don t Want To Know" c/w "There Goes My Everything" reached #9 and #21 on the Billboard country and pop charts respectively. The June 1971 follow-up studio album Love Letters From Elvis also contains songs recorded during the historic four-day Nashville session that spawned Elvis Country, including "Got My Mojo Working" and "Life" (Billboard #53).

This new 2-CD Legacy Edition features both these classic original albums plus 6 bonus tracks, including the full version of "I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago," the studio jam "A Hundred Years From Now" and the single "Where Did They Go, Lord" c/w "Rags To Riches," which reached #33 on the Billboard chart.

‘Elvis Country’ Legacy Edition: Sony Legacy have issued a press release publicising the new January 3rd release.
It includes…
The original 12-song Elvis Country (subtitled "I'm 10,000 Years Old"), debuted January 23, 1971 on the Billboard album chart, peaked at #12, spent 21 weeks on the chart, and was certified RIAA Gold.
In the original Rolling Stone review future Presley biographer Peter Guralnick wrote, "Elvis has come out with a record which gives us some of the very finest and most affecting music since he first recorded for Sun almost 17 years ago." The idea of inserting excerpts of "I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago" in between the album tracks gave the LP a conceptual feel that had never been encountered before. And the songs, from the high-energy rock of "I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" (which gives Jerry Lee Lewis a run for the money), to the big ballads that were becoming an Elvis trademark (Eddy Arnold's "I Really Don't Want To Know" and Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" among them) that were some of Elvis' greatest performances ever.

Elvis Country was a breath of fresh air for most of his millions of fans, and signaled a renaissance of his creative energies.
The new Nashville band had the feel of the Memphis hitmakers of 1969, mainly because their core members were part of the original Muscle Shoals sound which put that town on the map: bassist Norbert Putnam, pianist David Briggs, and drummer Jerry Carrigan. Add in masterful guitarist James Burton - who had become indispensable to Elvis after the two recent Las Vegas residencies - and the scene was set.
There were inevitable contrasts to the tightly structured Memphis sessions, but it ended there. In Nashville, once the song-pluggers put in their suggestions, the rest was up to Elvis, who never ceased to surprise all who were
present He laid down first and second takes with ease, and then turned around and initiated impromptu studio jams that kept the musicians firing on all cylinders.
It all came to a head on the fourth night. After a couple of warm-ups (including Eddy Arnold's "I Really Don't Want To Know"), they thought back to the country tunes they'd already recorded, and the idea of a country album began to take shape. In short order, Elvis laid down Bob Wills' western-swing standard "Faded Love" and Ernest Tubb's "Tomorrow Never Comes." After cutting Hank Cochran's barroom weeper "Make The World Go Away" (via Eddy Arnold), Elvis and crew moved on to Willie's "Funny How Time Slips Away" and then "I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water," familiar to rock and roll fans of Johnny Rivers, but originally a big country hit for Stonewall Jackson.
Ernst Jorgensen wrote about the session, "Elvis seemed inspired, singing with a passion and soulfulness that recalled Memphis, the band fell in with equal feeling, their confidence and expressiveness growing along with his. Both singer and band were performing out of genre, improvising their own rhythms and phrasing on the spot, challenging each other." To paraphrase Jorgensen, "they had something to be proud of."

4. 'Elvis Presley – A Moment in Time, 4 Days in ’56' by "Return To Tupelo" producer Michael Rose chronicles the four days from early 1956 as Elvis barnstorms from Detroit through Columbus, and finally back to Memphis and his new home at Audubon Drive - May 25 to May 28th 1956.
In Memphis for Elvis Week 2012 Ernst Jorgenson said that it was a 192 page photo book being produced as a companion release to the Sony/Legacy 5CD box set, "Young Man With The Big Beat".
Michael Rose has been working with Ernst Jorgenson for the last 12 months hunting down contacts and stories.

Updated 'Young Man with the Big Beat' In-Depth Review: Released to coincide with the 55th anniversary celebration of Elvis' national break-through year, 'Young Man with the Big Beat' is a 5-disc box set in a retro format containing all of the 1956 RCA Masters including the complete albums 'Elvis Presley' (#1254) and the second 'Elvis' (#1382). It also includes a previously-unreleased live show, outtakes and rare interviews with the Elvis along with an 84-page book with a day-by-day chronology plus assorted photos and memorabilia.
Back in March 1956 an RCA promotional poster billed Elvis Presley as a "Young Man with the Big Beat". There is no doubt that the billboard’s designers would have had no idea what an impact that BIG BEAT would have on future generations, shaking the very ground of the until now easy-listening entertainment world.
Can this new box-set really capture everything that Elvis achieved in this great Rock'n'Roll year

'1956, Elvis Presley’s Pivotal Year': TIME magazine featured this recent article by SONY/FTD's music producer and consultant Roger Semon. The article helps explain to readers what the new deluxe box-set 'Young Man With The Big Beat' is all about.
... "In the mid-1950s, the post-war Eisenhower era of social conformity in America was at its peak, and musically, the most threatening image appeared to be Bill Haley’s kiss-curl as he sang “Rock Around The Clock.” That all changed on Jan. 28, 1956, when a raw and electric Elvis Presley made his breakthrough on the CBS program Stage Show. Presley’s good looks, sensuous moves and mesmerizing voice made him a sensation overnight. But it wasn’t until a third appearance on the show that Presley truly challenged the status quo. On Feb. 11, the singer performed “Heartbreak Hotel” and by April, the single would be #1 on the Billboard chart. At last, teenagers had music of their own to swoon over while their parents continued listening to Frank Sinatra and Mario Lanza....

"Young Man With The Big Beat" Detailed Review: David McGee in a detailed review for The Bluegrass Special writes about the special features included in "Young Man With The Big Beat," which will be in stores everywhere beginning September 27, 2011.
‘What Is Going On?’- In 1956 Elvis’s guitarist, Scotty Moore, asked the question.
Elvis supplied the resounding answer. And this new box-set chronicles that momentous year for the man who would be King.
"The heart of the five CD set is the two discs of Original Masters. Three other CDs flesh out the story of a landmark year in American music. A disc of outtakes (some previously released, some seeing the light of day for the first time) is pretty well narrowcast for Elvis die-hards who have a vested interest in hearing, say, 11 of the 12 takes of “Lawdy Miss Clawdy,” or the same number of runs at “Shake, Rattle and Roll.” The real attraction of the Outtakes disc is the inclusion at the end of a 30-minute interview with Elvis conducted by trade journalist Robert Brown at New York’s Warwick Hotel on March 24, 1956."
"With little biographical detail then available about Elvis, Brown begins the questioning with Elvis’s self-recording at Sun and his job as a
Crown Electric truck driver. Given how few interviews with Elvis exist, it’s still fascinating to hear him talk about how determined he was to make something of himself at Crown Electric. ... His own words betray the discipline and drive both Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins (below with Elvis) saw in Elvis that not only inspired them but also left no doubt in their minds as to his eventual success as an entertainer."
As Peter Guralnick noted in 'Last Train To Memphis' - After the release of  Heartbreak Hotel... “They were back on the Hayride the following week for the first time in a month. A lot had happened in that month, but for Elvis and Scotty and Bill there had been no time to gauge it, and it didn’t appear all that different from everything else that had been building and going on for the last year. They did ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ for the first time, said Scotty Moore , ‘and that damn auditorium down there almost exploded. I mean, it had been wild before that, but it was more like playing down at your local camp, a home folks-type situation. But now they turned into--it was different faces, just a whole other… That’s the earliest I can remember saying, What is going on?’”

'Fashion For A King' FTD in-depth Review: 'Fashion For A King' is an FTD co-produced Book/CD package, featuring a 512-page book written by Norwegians Tommy Edvardsen and Atle Larsen - it also includes 2 new live soundboards.
This is an almighty project, a coffee-table book including details and photos of all of Elvis’ stage outfits.
There is no doubt that Elvis collectors found the pre-publicity mouth-watering since it promised "a full documentary of all Elvis’ suits" and nothing of this magnitude has been done before - and certainly not with FTD as the official co-publisher.
The book assembles an astounding selection of images of Elvis from 1968 to 1977 from many notable photographic contributors including Ed Bonja, Keith Alveston, George O’Hill, Bob Heis and Sherrif Hannah.
With varying reviews already published, from glowing "one of the best", to terrible "if this was a car it would be recalled", EIN contributor Geoffrey McDonnell and Piers Beagley have worked together to give you this honest, informed and in-depth review. Go here for review and images.

FTD Reprints and that 'Frankie & Johnny' Rumour: EIN cannot understand why the recent rumour about the FTD 'Frankie & Johnny' soundtrack reprint has caused so much interest with Elvis collectors (see news story below). Surely this is of minor importance compared to the up&coming '48 Hours To Memphis'? And if FTD need to reprint an old release, then surely they would use the Vic Anesini new Remasters?
Ernst Jørgensen kindly clarified the situation for us today and the question of future FTD reprints...
"Everytime we sell out of a product and have to reprint the title, we have a discussion on whether to improve the package or not. Currently we are (thinking of) reprinting about 11 titles, so we have 11 discussions. We will inform people through the proper channels when we are ready with these new releases and possible expanded/changed versions of titles.
- We also change our minds sometimes!!!
However it's been interesting to read the sites since Elvis Australia (Troedson) started the rumour. The way I read them is that many fans think we are "greedy bastards" if we make some of the older releases into new 2 CD packages, and they will have to buy them again. I certainly understand the viewpoint, but I'm also sure there are people of other opinions.
The label is aimed at giving fans what they want - FTD's problem is to understand what the majority of the collectors want".

FTDs Frankie And Johnny Soundtrack CD - NO Re-release planned as yet: According to Elvis Australia, and reported elsewhere, the FTD Frankie and Johnny Soundtrack CD will be re-released when FTD 'have made the neccessary corrections'. When contacted, Ernst Jorgensen at FTD said that, NO announcement about this release had been made. He had no idea where this rumour came from.
EIN remembers that the original LP Masters always sounded shockingly bad and would be improved if replaced by the Vic Anesini 2007 remasters. The extra outakes always sounded fine in comparison

Tuesday 16 AUGUST 2011 .... Elvis Week 2011
"48 Hours To Memphis" - new FTD: A fantastic surprise for Elvis collectors and possibly the best FTD release of the year. The next concert release will feature a previously unknown multi-track recording of Elvis' Richmond show, March 18 1974. Taken from a tape copy (2 channels mix-down) of a 16-track recording, the show is complete (with some tape damage that has been fixed/altered). It has been mastered by Vic Anesini!
This recording was made 2 days before 'Recorded live on stage in Memphis'. It’s an unbelievable discovery: The recording 48 hours to Memphis came from a newly discovered, unmarked tape which later appeared to be a copy of the 16-track recording machine.

People who attended the concert from Richmond and heard 48 hours to Memphis believe that this recording came closest to the actual experience of an Elvis Presley concert. This CD will be presented as an 7” album with a 16-page booklet featuring never before seen photos of the actual concert. See YouTube TRAILER here.

TRACKLIST - Richmond, March 18 1974

'Stage Rehearsal' FTD Review: Elvis' triumphant return to live performances was filmed by MGM in August 1970. The live footage in ‘That's The Way It Is’ was compiled from six concerts, filmed over four nights from the Opening Show on August 10th to the August 13th Dinner Show.
The new FTD focuses on the August 10th Dress Rehearsal for these all-important concerts - it also includes 6 Bonus Songs from 1972 & 1973.
EIN had high expectations of this great rehearsal, after all as a Fan Club Collectors’ release we pay good money to hear the real Elvis warts and all. However much of original spontaneity of Elvis' great performance has somehow been lost in the FTD production. On the other hand, there is no doubting that the remastered sound quality is fantastic and there are some real treats along the way especially with the Bonus Songs.
Go here for EIN's in-depth review - and have YOUR SAY on whether this is a good release.

'An Afternoon In The Garden' Best Selling Elvis album of 2011: 'An Afternoon In The Garden' has once again re-entered the Billboard 200 this week - at #177 - with 3,087 copies sold.
- As of (late) October last year, the album had scanned a total of 194,552 units.
- A total of 306,183 units had been scanned in the US, as of last Sunday.
Consequently, 'An Afternoon In The Garden' sold/scanned approximately 112,000 copies in the past 9 months.
To date, the album has spent 20 weeks on the Catalogue chart and 14 weeks on the Billboard 200. 'An Afternoon In The Garden' is, with quite a margin, the best-selling Elvis album in 2011. Its chart performance and sales are actually better than the all the "new" Sony mainstream Elvis releases from the past ~3 years (including 'Viva Elvis' & 'Elvis '75').
The album re-entered the charts back in February 2011 and has been dipping in and out of both the Billboard 'Top 200' and 'Catalog Chart'.
(with thanks to Mael for the stats).
'An Afternoon In The Garden' was rated very highly in our recent EIN Madison Square Garden Spotlight - click here.

'Fashion For A King' Book/CD combo: “Fashion For A King” is a 512-page book including 2 CDs a Pål Granlund/Flaming Star production, written by Tommy Edvardsen and Atle Larsen. It also includes 2 new live soundboards (see details below)
It's Elvis Time reports the following news from the authors.
Elvis Presley made a special fashion of his famous and spectacular stage outfits, sometimes referred to as ”jumpsuits”. In every country there is an “Elvis impersonator” well dressed up in a copy of one of Elvis Presley’s outfits. The name “Elvis” is heard of in every corner of the world, and nearly everybody have heard about the dynamic performer dressed in a typical “seventies suit” with rhinestones and embroideries in different patterns. But what many people don’t know, is that these suits have their own name and their own story to tell. Not many people know how these outfits came to be characteristics for Elvis on stage, and their development during the years. It all started with the “Black Leather Suit” in 1968, and ended with the “Mexican Sundial Suit” in 1977.Elvis became King Of Concerts in the late sixties and seventies – and the stage outfits became an important part of his shows. In this encyclopaedia of more that 500 pages we will present you to a full documentary of all Elvis’ suits from his famous Comeback Special in 1968, his return to live performances in Las Vegas in 1969 and his many tours and TV Specials through the 1970’s. You will have the background story of each and every suit, when Elvis used them for the first and the last time - and their whereabouts today.
We will also give you the background story of the very skilled designers who made these famous outfits. Elvis often mixed suits and belts as he pleased. Here you will see them all. This book is the result of hundreds of working hours with research and “digging” through enormous amounts of documentation. After doing a long article series in the Norwegian “Flaming Star” Fan Club Magazine, our publisher, Pål Granlund asked if we were interested in making a book of the published material. Pål Granlund is one of a few Norwegians who have had the honour of meeting The King in person in Las Vegas and on tour. We have worked closely with Pål in this project, and as a result of this, we can now present - for the first time - a book with a fully documented story and pictures of Elvis Presley’s stage outfits. This book is not meant only for the hardcore “jumpsuit”-fan, but also as an encyclopaedia for fans all over the world to learn more about these great, original stage-outfits. Never has a book been more complete on this issue, and you will see rare photos and photos you have never seen before. We are very proud of this project and the opportunity to give you an idea of how these suits became the typical trademark of Elvis’ legacy as a live performer.
Best regards Tommy Edvardsen & Atle Larsen - authors.

UPDATED Elvis Amarillo ’77 FTD CD Review: Elvis' second tour of 1977 kicked off in Tempe, Arizona on March 23rd. He had just returned from his final vacation in Hawaii and was hopefully rested and recuperated.
This previously un-released March 24th Amarillo concert was the second concert in the two-week tour and hopefully Elvis would be in better form than was often the case in 1977. In fact Felton Jarvis started recorded some songs professionally for the 'Moody Blue' album from Norman, Oklahoma the very next day.
The new Amarillo FTD focuses on this second tour and includes 11 Bonus Tracks creating a very packed CD. These include 'Steamroller Blues' Elvis' only 1977 version from Austin, Texas - as well as the very rare live 'Bosom of Abraham/You Better Run' previously unreleased.
Go here as EIN contributor Geoffrey McDonnell checks out this brand new FTD to see whether Elvis' Hawaii holiday really had got him fired up and ready to rock.

Two new Elvis 1956 SONY/Legacy releases to match EPE’s 55th Anniversary Celebrations

'Young Man With The Big Beat' UK Release Info: EIN contributor Brian Quinn contacted Sony(UK) to ask if the new box-set would get a UK release and what were its chart prospects.
SONY replied, "Yes it will be released in the UK. It’s a high end piece so will get focused but limited promotion. Not sure it’s chart eligible but with the numbers we can sell it wouldn’t bother the UK top 40."

‘Young Man With the Big Beat’ New 1956 DELUXE BoxSet 5cd Release: A new 1956 Super Deluxe 1956 boxset to be released September 27, 2011.
... "The recorded legacy of Elvis Presley continues to be discovered by new generations that never saw him or heard him perform live. It's hard to appreciate that he started so much of what we take for granted now in popular music. Until 1956, the teenagers of suburban America, and the rest of the world, had to endure ditties by Rosemary Clooney and Perry Como but everything was about to be tossed upside down. On January 28 on a cold night in New York, Elvis took America by storm as he appeared on CBS-TV's Stage Show hosted by Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey. On February 4 for his second appearance he sang a song that literally changed the world of popular music "Heartbreak Hotel". Its unique sound and style literally blew everything before it away while at the same time inducing the blueprint for everything that was to come; by April, it would be #1 on Billboard. This incredible step-change in musical history resonated around the world and while liberating millions of young adolescent teenagers it also inspired many successful artists of today to pick a guitar or sing - everyone wanted to be like Elvis. The pure spontaneity of these seminal recordings
shows through even today; "Heartbreak Hotel", Don't Be Cruel", "Hound Dog", "Blue Suede Shoes" and "My Baby Left Me" are some of the greatest rock 'n' roll records ever made. Elvis' unprecedented level of achievement is still the benchmark by which artistic success is measured today and YOUNG MAN WITH THE BIG BEAT is testament to the phenomenon and cultural icon that is Elvis Presley.

'Elvis Is Back!' Legacy Edition review: ‘Elvis Is Back!’ the album that Elvis Presley recorded in Nashville in March and April 1960 is widely regarded as one of the best and most important albums he ever made. A half-century later, "Elvis Is Back" is now coupled with 1961’s "Something For Everybody," an album he recorded back in Nashville one year later. Along with one dozen hit single sides also recorded in Nashville’s famous Studio B and which charted over roughly the same period of time.
The deluxe 'Elvis Is Back!' Legacy Edition" combining these two great albums was released on March 8, 2011.
Following on from the impressive Legacy versions of 'On Stage' and 'From Elvis In Memphis' is this re-release really worth purchasing all over again?
EIN's Piers Beagley checks out this new RCA Legacy release.

'An Afternoon In The Garden' back in Billboard Charts yet Again! During the past couple of months the 'An Afternoon In The Garden' album has re-entered and left the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. It is back again this week re-entering at #123 with a star denoting greatest airplay and sales gain. It has also re-entered the Catalog Album Charts at No.12 with a star.
It is interesting, apart from being a great album, as to why this particular one should be getting so much chart success now, even performing better than the recent 'Elvis Is Back' Legacy release.
We are informed that the album is on sale for $5, along with others, at such stores as Walmart.

It is also No.29 on Billboard’s Top Catalog albums.

Australian 'Elvis is Back!' 2-CD Legacy Edition OUT NOW: Despite notifications that the 'Elvis Is Back! 2-CD Legacy Edition' release was delayed one week, it is out now in Australia, and was in the shops February 26th. The Australian version is not an imported version as noted on other Elvis websites.

Two words exploded worldwide on December 19, 1957 – “Elvis Drafted!” – but three words resounded across the universe even more explosively on March 3, 1960: “Elvis Is Back!”  the album that Elvis Presley began recording in Nashville on March 20th, and finished in the legendary overnight session of April 3-4th, is widely regarded as possibly the best album he ever made.
A half-century later, "Elvis Is Back" is now coupled with 1961’s "Something For Everybody," an album he recorded back in Nashville one year later.

Along with one dozen hit single sides recorded (also in Nashville) and charted over roughly the same period of time, the deluxe "ELVIS IS BACK: LEGACY EDITION" is OUT NOW.

‘LIVE IN VEGAS’ new FTD update: The new FTD of Elvis Live in Vegas in 1969 - previously called 'White Knight In Vegas’ - now gets a name change to the very unimaginative 'Live in Vegas'.
‘Live In Vegas' features a great complete concert the AUGUST 26, DINNER SHOW from Elvis’ opening Vegas season in 1969.
Ann Moses was a correspondent for the infamous NME and TIGER BEAT publications during this magic time and hHer unique photos from this season are featured in the package, some published for the first time. The booklet also includes a unique essay written by Ann.
‘Live In Vegas’ will be issued as a 5" digipack featuring a 12- page booklet and is mastered by VIC ANESINI from the original multi track tapes.
It is this great show that gave us the astounding ‘Suspicious Minds’ from the original ‘In Person’ album as well as the excellent ‘My Babe’ from the Silver ‘EAP’ box-set. The vast majority of this concert has never been released.

'Heartbreak Hotel' was released 55 years ago today on January 27th 1956.
Billboard reviewed it as "a strong blues item wrapped up in his usual powerful style and a great beat"'.
For years afterwards 'Heartbreak Hotel' defined Elvis Presley – the echo-soaked voice, the plaintive lament of the singer down at the end of lonely street, the potent sexual promise offered to broken-hearted lovers.
'Heartbreak Hotel' marked the take-off of Elvis' domination of everything Teenage and Rock'n'Roll but the success of the record also marked the end of an era for the old-fashioned post-war music industry.

'Rihanna ties UK chart record set by Elvis' - AS IF!: Media reports are out that Rihanna has tied a chart record set by Elvis Presley after hitting the top of the pop charts in Britain again.
With her hit, "What's My Name," Rihanna has become the first female solo artist in UK history to achieve five number one singles for five years in a row.
The only other solo artist to equal this achievement was Elvis in the 1950s.
However, what is totally forgotten - as always - is that the number of singles / downloads sold nowadays needed to get to Number One is a paltry figure. In the past, sales of near 1 million were standard, and singles stayed as "chart toppers" for weeks in a row.
The price of a 'single' was also comparatively much higher. Boy, did we have to save out pocket-money to buy a 45 RPM!!
Nowadays the turn-over - and 'single' releases are far more frequent and transitory - and the price easily affordable.
Will fans in 33 years time remember what Rihanna's five Number Ones were? Sadly, no!

New FTD Release Error: Following on from the 'Elvis (aka Fool)' Classic Album Disc 2 track error ('Padre' was repeated) is the latest one as featured on FTD release "Chicago Stadium". The track numbers on Disc 1 do not match the song line-up. 'See, See Rider' is shown on the cover as track 1, but on the disc it is actually track 2. And by the time you get to the 'Closing Vamp' you are two numbers out. 'Closing Vamp' listed as track 22 but actually track 24.
Disc Two is a behind from track 12 onwards, it should be 'What'd I Say/Johnny B. Goode' but is 'Early Mornin' Rain'. It seems those medleys cause track point issues for FTD but that can't be used as an excuse on disc 1.
As EIN contributor Tony Stuchbury points out, "Heck, I can make a CDR of this and correct it so why can't they be bothered to get it right in the first place?!"
This CD was Mastered by Lene Reidel who has previously made major mistakes with her FTD work.
