Saturday 3 February 2024
'Elvis: Stateline Sahara 1974' New FTD: As part of its ongoing live series, FTD is pleased to announce the release of 'Elvis: Stateline Sahara 1974'.
Released as a 3-CD 5” digi-pak this set features three great concerts from Lake Tahoe, Nevada: May 19 (Evening show), May 20 (Midnight show) and May 25 (Midnight show). Recorded in mono.
This was Elvis' third season in Lake Tahoe which featured 22 performances in two weeks.
EIN NOTE: FTD have previously released 'Spanish Eyes', 'Steamroller Blues' and 'How Great Thou Art' from May 19 plus 'Johnny B. Goode' and 'I'm Leaving' from May 25.
All of these full concerts are previously unreleased.
EIN noted in our review of FTD's 'High Sierra' ....
Spanish Eyes (May 19 DS) is a request "We made a promise to somebody that we'd do this" - not rushed and a concert highlight! One of the BEST ever performances.
I'm Leavin' (May 25 MS) is really superb version, conveying the sadness of the lyrics. The audio quality sparkles and this is possibly the first time Elvis sang this on-stage in 1974 before bringing it back as a regular for his Vegas summer season.

New FTD October Releases: The official FTD announcement is for these two new releases for October.
1. 'Elvis: Summer Of '76': As part of its ongoing live on tour series, FTD is pleased to announce the release of Elvis: Summer Of '76. Released as a 3-CD 5" digi-pak, this set features three 1976 concerts:
CD1 - Charleston, West Virginia, Afternoon Show, July 24
CD2 - Springfield, Massachusetts, Evening Show, July 29

The Hampton Roads August 1 show has been out previously on bootleg (Fort Baxter’s ‘Bicentennial Elvis Experience') and Elvis sounds exhausted. Fans consider it one of his worst performances - what an odd choice for FTD to release. The only song of interest is a rough version of 'Return To Sender' but it's already released by FTD.

3.'Elvis: The His Hand In Mine Sessions' FTD's 3-CD "complete" 'His Hand In Mine' sessions is being reprinted.
This is an amazing success story as the "complete" sessions version only featured a few more minutes than FTD's original HHIM 'Classic Album' release from 2007.

'Elvis: Houston, Fort Worth, Baton Rouge 1974' FTD in-depth Review: This FTD triple-pack features Elvis' important March 3 1974 Houston Astrodome performance plus two more concerts from Elvis’ third tour of 1974.
In the first half of 1974 Elvis was clearly enjoying performing before the emotional turmoil of ‘Desert Storm’.
The Houston Astrodome show is an important concert recording since there was no orchestra involved, while the two other concerts - Fort Worth, June 15 Evening Show and Baton Rouge, June 17 - come from the first two cities on Elvis' third tour of 1974.
FTD have already released nine concerts from this particular tour, so can there really be anything new to discover from yet another two concerts?

Go here as Elvis soundboard super-collector Geoffrey McDonnell & EIN's Piers Beagley give you the in-depth low-down on this new FTD triple-pack ....

Elvis 'Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite' in the charts: The 50th anniversary release of Elvis' classic 'Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite' has made a few, albeit minor, impressions in the worldwide charts this month.
There of course can be no doubt that keen Elvis fans have already bought  this release multiple times before.
Serious collectors will have bought the 2022 FTD release (see review here)
Despite all of this the 50th anniv release of 'Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite' has made...
- Switzerland Top 100 Album Charts
reached #10 (August 20)
- UK Charts
In the UK Official Album sales chart - (this is "real sales", not streaming) - 'Aloha' is at #13. UK - Vinyl Album charts - 'Aloha' is at #33
Interesting to note that  the new vinyl concept of 'ELVIS LIVE 1972' made #14 in the UK Vinyl LP charts back in April. (see EIN review)
In the Official UK "Top 100 Album Chart" sadly 'Aloha' did not feature at all with only the classic 'Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits' still sitting at #45. This is notably above 'The Beatles #1s' at #57.
Sadly it is obvious that "Elvis Week" has even less impact chart-wise in the USA.
The Billboard Top 200 has no entry at all for 'Aloha From Hawaii' only 'Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits' at #163
On a more positive note
- The Spanish Album Charts has -  'Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite' at #50
The Spanish Vinyl charts has -  'Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite' at #13
- The Scottish Top 100 Album charts - Last week had  'Aloha' at #13
While the original 1973 'Aloha' LP release made the Billboard Album chart #1 in February 1973 - and UK's #11 maybe it is incredible that a re-release makes any album chart at all fifty years on.
We are sure Elvis would be amazed.

'Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite' Elvis Week Q&A and Listening Session: Watch producers Ernst Jørgensen / Roger Semon and recording engineer Matt Ross-Spang when Tom Brown talks to them about the new upgraded 50th anniversary release of Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite.
It's very enjoyable viewing including some nice clips, however there was no actual "Q&A" from the audience which would have made it even more interesting.
Delightful to see Ernst Jørgensen, Roger Semon and Matt Ross-Spang all get so excited when discussing the venture.

'Aloha from Hawaii' 50th Anniv Release OUT NOW: The 2023 upgrade of 'Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite'" - was released yesterday August 11, 2023. -- To purchase on streaming services - Go here.
'Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite' is the apogee of an astounding career trajectory that began with Elvis' return to live performance in 1968 with an electrifying "comeback" television special that restored him to pop dominance after a seven year hiatus from the concert stage.

For the first time in one authorized package, the entirety of the original January 14, 1973 performance, the previous night's dress rehearsal with a live audience (recorded in case of technical mishaps during the satellite transmission), several bonus tracks inserted into the US broadcast of the event and a Blu-ray transfer of the concert film. The deluxe set includes a 28-page booklet featuring in-depth liner notes penned by lifelong Elvis fan /respected music critic Randy Lewis, rare photos and memorabilia from the event,
Ernst Jørgensen and Matt Ross-Spang have fully remixed the album from the original 16-track live recordings, first captured on tape by esteemed mobile engineer Wally Heider and newly digitized for this release with audiophile 24-bit, 192 KHz transfers, to bring fans a fresh listen to what, for many, is the most treasured performance of Elvis' latter-day years on the road.
Jørgensen noted, "To me that is the biggest thing: Aloha never sounded this good and Elvis never sounded this good."

'Elvis Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite' 3CD/Bluray Box-Set price $55 and Double-LP VINYL price $37
Purchase via streaming services here
EIN Note: Fans report that, as expected, compared to the 2022 'Aloha' FTD version it is only the Rehearsal Concert that has been newly remixed by Matt Ross-Spang.
Similarly the BluRay shows no improvement on previous DVD copies.

'Aloha from Hawaii' 50th Anniv Release for Elvis Week 2023: The official announcement is out "Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of 'Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite'" - To be released August 11, 2023.
'Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite' is the apogee of an astounding career trajectory that began with Elvis' return to live performance in 1968 with an electrifying "comeback" television special that restored him to pop dominance after a seven year hiatus from the concert stage.

By 1973 Elvis was a living legend whose status as the world's first atomic-powered singer in the 1950s had evolved into movie stardom before his return to live performance generated a new iconography of Elvis. His watershed global telecast was the first full-length concert by any musician to be beamed around the world over communications satellites newly orbiting the earth in ever increasing numbers.
A half century later, the live album and concert film from that performance are perhaps the most revelatory documents of the live shows that Elvis poured so much of his heart and soul into during the 1970s.

The 50th anniversary edition of 'Elvis Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite', newly remixed and remastered, will be out as a 3CD + Blu-ray combined package - as well as 2LP VINYL and on digital on August 11, 2023.

Fans will be disappointed that the CD listings are identical to the 2022 FTD Aloha Deluxe release

Jørgensen noted, "To me that is the biggest thing: Aloha never sounded this good and Elvis never sounded this good."

In the four and a half years between the '68 special and Aloha from Hawaii, Elvis woodshedded his act with a rigorous series of live performances— over 500 --in which he re-asserted the role he'd established in the '50s as one of the most electrifying performers of his generation.
Both in Las Vegas and on tour to various parts of the United States, Presley refined and expanded his mastery of musical interpretation of songs long associated with him, while also putting his distinctive stamp on classic and more recent material first popularized by artists as beloved as The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, James Taylor, Hank Williams, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Jim Reeves and Hawaii's own Kuiokalani "Kui" Lee.

The Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite program was produced and directed by television veteran Marty Pasetta, who'd done specials for Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Glen Campbell and had experience in Hawaii with Don Ho. Pasetta employed split screen techniques and quick cuts to mirror the energy Elvis & Co. put out on stage. The telecast also regularly offered extreme close-ups bringing viewers into contact with Elvis with an intimacy that even those in the audience didn't have.

New FTDs OUT NOW: And heading to your local Elvis dealers this week....
- 'Elvis As Recorded At Madison Square Garden' 3-CD set. OUT NOW. After Elvis completed a hugely successful and sold-out tour filmed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for the 1972 documentary 'Elvis On Tour' in April, confidence was high in the Elvis camp with all four shows at New York's Madison Square Garden sold out, as did the rest of the June tour. Any reservations Elvis might have had about performing in the Big Apple were quickly dispelled as the noise from the MSG crowd was deafening. The New York Times 'Arts and Leisure' headline summing up the triumph read 'Like a Prince From Another Planet'.
Elvis As Recorded at Madison Square Garden with the evening show of June 10 was a rush release later in the month and sold a million copies in the US in just a few weeks. Total US sales to date exceed 3 million, achieving triple platinum status. The afternoon show was eventually released by RCA as An Afternoon In The Garden in 1997, 20 years after Elvis' death.
This belated FTD 50th Anniversary Edition celebrates these legendary shows with remixed versions of both shows by Memphis recording engineer Matt-Ross Spang.
Disc 3 contains the original press conference, recorded at the New York Hilton on June 9th.
Packaged in our 8' x 8' 'Sessions' slipcase, this deluxe 3-CD includes a 20-page color booklet, great photos, memorabilia, press conference transcript and stories from the late Phil Gelormine.

- 'The Making Of Blue Hawaii': Following on from the success of ‘The Making of Jailhouse Rock”, FTD Books announces the release of “The Making of Blue Hawaii”.
The deluxe movie book by David English / Pal Granlund contains 387 pages of rare photos and extensive memorabilia from the film including shooting schedules and memories from cast and crew.
The music book includes 85 pages of photos and detailed recording documents.
4 compact discs feature the soundtrack recording sessions which are newly mixed from the original 3-track tapes.
Featuring 50 unreleased takes, the songs are sequenced in recording order for the first time.
A 33rpm vinyl EP is also included.

Perhaps to compensate Elvis fans who cannot afford the Deluxe books there is also the unusual announcement that "The recording sessions audio will be issued later this year as an FTD audio only release".

'Elvis LIVE 1972' (double-LP) Review: On this brand new ‘ELVIS LIVE 1972’ double-vinyl release producer Ernst Jørgensen has cleverly included nearly all of the concert highlights from RCA's ‘On Tour’.
The album features a "best of" the four 'On Tour' concerts using one key section from each of the first three concerts (one per vinyl side) plus the missing unique tracks on Side D.
'On Tour' classics from Hampton Roads 'Polk Salad', 'Big Hunk O' Love', from Richmond 'It's Over', Greensboro 'Burning Love', 'Funny How Times Slips Away', 'For The Good Times' plus San Antonio 'Proud Mary', 'How Great Thou Art' are all included...
But if fans already own all these songs from the recent 'On Tour' box-set can this vinyl version really be worth buying?
This title was released on March 24 2023.

Go here as EIN's Piers Beagley spins the VINYL, played them loud and rumbled his bass-speakers....

UPDATED - 'Elvis On Tour' Box-Set In-Depth Review: The January 2023 'Elvis On Tour' SONY release is a 6CD / 1 Blu-Ray box set comprised of the audio from four of the shows (and two rehearsals) that were part of Elvis’ 1972 North American tour.
Originally recorded for the Elvis On Tour concert film that was released later that year, the set features a total of 145 tracks, including 91 previously unreleased tracks, as well as the award-winning concert film on Blu-ray.
RCA/Legacy's Elvis On Tour box set is produced by Ernst Jørgensen and mixed by Grammy Award-winning Memphis-based producer Matt Ross-Spang.
Elvis' April 1972 concerts were magnificent, so hopefully this expensive 50th anniversary release including newly remastered concert performances captures the magnificence and excitement of the movie and Elvis' stunning shows.
After fifty years surely SONY/RCA will get it right.....

EIN's in-depth review by Piers Beagley checks out the positives and negatives in this 4,500 word review ... NOW UPDATED WITH YOUR COMMENTS - HAVE YOUR SAY...

'Elvis: Let Me Be There 1974' FTD In-depth Review: A 3CD soundboard release from Elvis' January-Feb 1974 Las Vegas season and FTD's first new release for 2023.
Released as a 3-CD 5" digi-pak, this set features three 1974 concerts recorded via soundboard at The Hilton Hotel, Las Vegas on January 28, plus Jan 29 and Feb 1, 1974 Midnight shows.
So far FTD have only released one Dinner Show from this season .
The January 29, 1974 Midnight Show is totally new for collectorsm with the Jan 28 Dinner Show, and Feb 1, 1974 Midnight Show only been released as bootleg AUDIENCE recordings.
While the early 1974 performances are fine quality with new songs 'Help Me', 'Spanish Eyes', 'Let Me Be There', ‘Trying To Get To You’ and ‘My Baby Left Me’ in the set-list - the audio mastering here sadly leaves a lot to be desired.
Elvis soundboard super-collector Geoffrey McDonnell along with EIN's Piers Beagley check out this 1974 triple- pack.

FTD March Releases: FTD have announced two releases for next month.
1. 'Elvis: Let Me Be There' a three CD soundboard release from Elvis' January-Feb 1974 Las Vegas season.
FTD's first new releases for 2023 with possible release date of March 6.
Released as a 3-CD 5" digi-pak, this set features three 1974 concerts recorded via soundboard at The Hilton Hotel, Las Vegas on January 28, 29 Midnight and February 1, 1974.
EIN Note: So far FTD have only released the January 27 Dinner Show from this season on 'I Found My Thrill' - and what a great performance that was.
We noted at the time that the "Bonus Track" from Feb 1 had some tape-hiss.
The January 29, 1974 Midnight Show is totally new for collectors. Both January 28, 1974 Dinner Show, and February 1, 1974 Midnight Show have only been released as bootleg AUDIENCE recordings 'Wild Tiger Vol.4' and 'First In Line'

EIN Note: So far FTD have only released the January 27 Dinner Show from this season on 'I Found My Thrill' - back in 2006 - and what a great performance that was.
We noted at the time that the "Bonus Track" from Feb 1 had some tape-hiss.
Hopefully better technology can help fix this in 2023.
from Feb 1 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ - Elvis who had just started dating Sheila Ryan says "This is for Sheila". While this is not in as good quality as the others (cassette hiss) it is a great inclusion as it is a very sincere & lovely version. It also includes the extra "The first time ever I lay with you" verse. Taken at a gentler tempo than the single, Elvis always put more soul into this song when performed live & this is no exception. A song that Elvis rarely performed in 1974, this is only the second live version ever released officially."

‘ELVIS ON TOUR’ Box-set finally OUT TODAY!: Only FIFTY YEARS to get it right - and the boxset is finally released world-wide today. They only had 50 years for these Elvis companies to get their act together - and they STUFFED IT up!
While EIN Australia does not yet have their new BluRay set we have been informed that it is identical to the previous 2012 release and has 'Don't Be Cruel' and not the Chuck Berry original 'Johnny B Goode' as the intro.
RCA/Legacy's Elvis On Tour box set is produced by Ernst Mikael Jørgensen and mixed by Grammy Award-winning Memphis-based producer Matt Ross-Spang.
This absurdity in 2023 beggars belief. What were they thinking?

The original recordings were made by Felton Jarvis and Al Pachucki.
The set comprises four concerts (and two rehearsals) that were part of Elvis’ 1972 North American tour. The set features a total of 145 tracks, including 91 tracks that have been previously unreleased, as well as the award-winning concert film on Blu-ray.
'Elvis On Tour' is a 6CD + 1 Blu-ray box set

Elvis & Britney Spears' 'Toxic Las Vegas' Debuts on Billboard Dance Chart: In somewhat happier news, 'Elvis/ Britney Spears' "Toxic Las Vegas (Jamieson Shaw Remix)" has debuted at No.26 on Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

In Baz Luhrmann's ELVIS biopic the remix appears in the scene depicting a montage of Presley’s Hollywood career throughout the Sixties - neatly depicting the toxic material that Col Parker supplied for Elvis' mid-sixties movies.

Elvis / Britney Spears ‘Toxic Las Vegas’ Mash-Up: As part of Elvis Presley’s birthday celebration, Jamieson Shaw has remixed the ‘Viva Las Vegas’ singer with Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ for one epic mashup.
Three months ago Baz Luhrmann explained that he was working on releasing the fan-favorite ‘Toxic Las Vegas’ remix from his recent film ELVIS which fuses Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas” with Spears’ 2003 hit, “Toxic.”
Luhrmann said, “There’s a lot of love, a lot of intense love for the Britney / Elvis track in the movie, and it’s my commitment to release the song”.
The remix appears in the scene depicting a montage of Presley’s Hollywood career throughout the Sixties.

It quickly massed views on YouTube and TikTok with one fan version getting 100+million views on TikTok.
Hollywoodzone states "The song is a bonafide club banger, with Elvis leading the first verse singing over Britney’s unforgettable beat. “Bright light city, bright light city, gonna set my soul on fire,” he croons. Spliced vocals of Britney’s “can’t calm down” lyric from “Toxic” then cut in as Elvis continues over the beat for a memorable and infectious track."

New FTD Releases: Two new FTD releases have been announced, for early November, a live 1971 soundboard and World's Fair VINYL but surprisingly nothing mentioned about the new 'ON TOUR' deluxe FTD set.
1. 'Las Vegas `71'. FTD's second 3cd set in a row, 'Las Vegas '71' is released as a 3-CD 5” digi-pak and the set features three 1971 concerts recorded at the International Hotel on January 27 / 28 Midnight shows and January 29 Dinner show.
Recorded by Bill Porter, the tapes unfortunately have imperfections, but we have prioritized the historic importance and rarity of these recordings.
EIN NOTE: The odd fact is that these three concerts have been out on bootleg for years and have recently been released as "Public Domain" by the MRS label. To FTD collectors there are not rare at all.
Obviously the 50 year EU Public Domain rule expired last year so why FTD did not release them in 2021 makes no sense. FTD are fully aware of PD rules and must be struggling to get their On Tour material out before the end of the year.

Disc 6 completes Elvis' rehearsals with his band at RCA Recordings Studios on March 31, 1972. The disc includes previously unreleased takes on Kris Kristofferson's 'For The Good Times' plus others already released.
As Elvis Presley’s national tour played to sold-out secondary markets across the country in 1972, Elvis was enjoying himself on-stage and finding electrifying new ways of connecting to audiences at every show. Working with a band and set lists of his choosing, Elvis was channeling the music he loved most--from pop and gospel and traditional country to blues and rock and contemporary hits--while transforming his own greatest hits with fresh arrangements, turning nostalgia into an unforgettable concert experience packed with immediacy.
-
Award-winning filmmakers Pierre Adidge and Robert Abel (Mad Dogs & Englishmen) went on the road with Elvis Presley and his band with all-access passes, cameras and crew to chronicle the
King of Rock & Roll at his on-stage peak in MGM’s Elvis On Tour documentary film. The film captures Elvis, the human being driving the myth, behind-the-scenes backstage with his eyes open and his defenses down. According to MGM's original press release, the Elvis On Tour film "offers the first intimate look at the enigmatic country boy who became the world's most celebrated musician." Both documentary and concert film, Elvis On Tour features

montage sequences supervised by Martin Scorsese. The film was released on November 1, 1972.
-
The Elvis On Tour box set includes fascinating behind-the-scenes liner notes by Jerry Schilling, a longtime personal friend and member of Elvis' inner circle.
-
The set also features an illuminating essay by rock historian/musician Warren Zanes, founding member of The Del Fuegos and Professor at New York University. According to Zanes: "The set lists and the performances of the Elvis On Tour period bring a rare thing: a fifties legend working in the early seventies who was still taking his audiences to new places.... "
