Elvis new Official CD Releases in 2017

All the SONY & FTD Release News

- EIN presents all the SONY & FTD Elvis Presley CD news for 2017 -

FTD - What now, What next, Where to – What’s left?: During Elvis’ lifetime, RCA released a total of between 60 – 70 albums, consisting of dedicated recordings, movie soundtracks and live performances.
The FTD label has been doing an excellent job at looking at the recording anthology of Elvis Presley and releasing every significant LP or recording session on a 1CD or 2CD ‘Classic Album’ version.
However as noted with the recent "ELVIS" second LP release there are less and less outtakes and studio sessions left in the vaults.
FTD’s first release was ‘Burbank ’68’ fifteen years ago, so with all the past releases and packaging what is left for the collector?

Go here as EIN contributor Ian Garfield examines what has been released and what is left for the FTD collectors label..

FTD "What now, What next, What If?": The FTD label has been doing an excellent job at looking at the recording anthology of Elvis Presley and releasing every significant LP or recording session on a 1CD or 2CD ‘Classic Album’ version.
However, as noted with the recent "ELVIS" second LP release, there are less and less outtakes and studio sessions left in the vaults.
Following our previous article “What now, what next, where to – what’s left” where EIN contributor Ian Garfield reviewed what has already been released by FTD, he now looks at how FTD might present their future 'Classic Album' releases.
Over the next couple of weeks, EIN will cover the remaining movie soundtracks and the possible inclusions that could produce a suitable release for the avid collector for these recordings.
This article covers the possible releases of Kissin’ Cousins and Roustabout.

Three New FTD Releases: FTD have announced three releases for late June.
- 'Roustabout' (1-CD)
53 years after its original release FTD is pleased to announce the long awaited "Classic Album" version of "Roustabout". Reaching #1 on Billboard in February 1965, it would Elvis’ last chart topping album until "Aloha From Elvis Via Satellite" in 1973. Packaged in 7" format with a full color 16-page memorabilia booklet, it contains previously unreleased material.
- Album Sales Tips From RCA Victor: (Special album release for November 1964)
We’ve had original soundtrack recordings by Elvis in the past and we needn’t dwell on their great success, but the new "ROUSTABOUT" album is undoubtedly on of the finest we’ve had! "It’s A Wonderful World" and "Big Love Big Heartache" are delivered smoothly to a smooth Latin-flavored accompaniment. Most of the tunes however, are the hard-rocker variety, especially "Hard Knocks and "There’s A Brand New Day On The Horizon." For a special gas, check out the lyrics on "Little Egypt" and "Poison Ivy League." We’ve got great music, a great cover, the movie tie-in, advertising and promotion support.
The FTD includes the previously unreleased tracks 'Hard Knocks' (take 4, movie version), 'Its A Wonderful World' (take 17, instrumental), 'It’s Carnival Time' (movie version) and newly discovered 'Roustabout' (takes 1-5,7, 10-16 & movie version).

'ELVIS: Las Vegas ‘74' FTD Review: A double set featuring both Dinner and Midnight shows from August  20, 1974 from Elvis' legendary 1974 Summer Season at the Las Vegas Hilton.
For Elvis 1974 was an emotionally turbulent year. This was his sixth season singing to the Las Vegas casino audiences, still doing two shows a night, and he was really feeling the loss of Priscilla. Yet this inner turmoil helped produce the most fascinating Las Vegas season of his career. He gave some of his longest performances and with a varied set-list including great new songs It’s Midnight, Promised Land, If You Talk In Your Sleep and Help Me.
One of the fascinations of this new double-pack is that it presents Elvis' second and third concerts by which time Elvis was back once again to the old regular set-list routine. Whatever the reason for Elvis' backwards step, fans can consider whether these concerts capture Elvis' happiness at being back pleasing his audience with the regular set-list.
Go here as super-collector Geoffrey McDonnell & EIN's Piers Beagley provide an in-depth review of this new release.

'A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings' New 40th Anniv SONY Release: As EIN reported last Sunday, SONY have now officially announced the release of 'A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings" for the 40th Anniversary celebration in one comprehensive package. Out Friday, July 28.
Distilled from the fabulous FTD deluxe release 'A Boy From Tupelo' 530 page book / CD combo (see EIN indepth review here) this mainstream release - 'A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings' includes - for the first time ever officially - on 3 CDs every surviving Elvis Presley Sun master and outtake, plus two private records Elvis paid with his own money to record, as well as all known radio - and concert performances from the period. Many of these recordings are rare demos, session takes, and live performances including a newly discovered and previously officially unreleased recording of "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" from a 1955 Louisiana Hayride performance.
The accompanying 120-page book compiled by Elvis authority Ernst Mikael Jørgensen and is, in essence, a fully-illustrated travelogue. It details the birth of Elvis' career through facts, anecdotes, documentation, many rare photos, and a succinct narrative.

Independence Day 1954 is when this uniquely American saga begins, less than 24 hours before his first professional recording session, and it ends in December 1955, when the rights to Elvis' Sun tapes officially expire and the singer leaves Sam Phillips and Sun Records to record for RCA Victor.
This is the story of Elvis Presley before he becomes world-famous, and how this amazing young man readies himself for stardom, achieving success on a level that no one could have dreamed possible.

Essential to the understanding and appreciation of Elvis and his explosive impact on pop music and culture, this presents - in the best possible sound- every known Presley recording from his early career, when the world's first atomic singer fused blues, pop and hillbilly country swing to create an electrifying new music that changed the world.
(News, Source;Sony/ElvisInfoNet)
On this "MSM" release the Mae Boren Axton interview with Elvis has been removed - from the original tracklisting - with 'I Forgot to Remember to Forget' now added as the final track on CD 3.
The tracklistings are otherwise the same as the FTD Deluxe 'A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings' release but here the multiple studio false-starts / outtakes have been simplified to be all combined within a single CD track. (Go here for the original FTD Deluxe 'A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings' more specialised tracklisting

'ELVIS In Atlanta' New FTD:  'ELVIS In Atlanta'  contains two legendary 1975 shows from the Omni Coliseum on April 30th and May 1, 1975 retrospectively.
This soundboard release is a 5" 2-CD digipack.
The digipak features great photos taken by Keith Alverson.
The CDs are mastered by Jan Eliasson
EIN notes that three Atlanta tracks were released by FTD on one of our favourite's "Southern Nights". Hopefully the thin-ish sound on that released has been improved by Jan Eliasson.
EIN's friend Ciscoking comments, "Elvis and Atlanta always was something very special.... Elvis loved Atlanta... Atlanta loved Elvis... he once called it "my second home".. and he always delivered great shows there. The Southern crowd went nuts as soon as he moved his little finger and our man got standing ovations for 'How Great Thou Art' or 'American Trilogy'. Being there must have been a fantastic experience - the King at his best. This will be a most welcome addition for FTD collectors."
The opening numbers of '2001 Theme', 'See See Rider' and 'I Got A Woman / Amen' were not recorded at either shows.
Ex  soundboard recordings, FTD notes there are several flaws on the original source tapes.

Two New FTDs OUT NOW: FTD new releases planned for April 2017 are at your local dealers now.
- 'ELVIS: Las Vegas ‘74': A double set featuring two concerts from Elvis' legendary August 1974 Summer Season at the Las Vegas Hilton comes as a 5” 2-CD digipack
The release features both Dinner and Midnight shows from August  20, 1974. (Although previously released audience recordings from these supposed shows do not match FTD's set-lists)
For Elvis 1974 was an emotionally turbulent year. This was his sixth season singing to the Las Vegas casino audiences, still doing two shows a night, and he was really feeling the loss of Priscilla. The dinner shows were beginning to bore him (people rattling cutlery) and who could blame him? Yet this inner turmoil helped produce the most fascinating Las Vegas season of his career. It has been mastered by Jan Eliasson.

- 'Elvis: His Songs of Praise Vol.2': Trevor Simpson's first book about Elvis' sacred, spiritual and gospel songs came out last september and now the long-anticipated sequel is in the shops. The second volume titled "Elvis: His Songs of Praise Vol.2" features 350 pages about the final half of the chosen Elvis sacred songs - 100 in all.
It promises over 350 pages with lavishly illustrated high-quality images, many unseen photographs and graphics. Every song has been thoroughly researched in a similar manner to Trevor Simpson’s previous trilogy "Elvis: The Best of British”.
In early interviews, Elvis divulged that spiritual music was his first love and he publicly continued to reaffirm. Despite being acclaimed as the ‘King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’, he was only presented with three Grammy awards and they were for his spiritual music and the stories of these iconic songs are much, much more contained within this book.

'Platinum: A Life In Music' Re-Release: Sony UK is re-releasing the classic 4-Cd set 'Platinum: A Life In Music' on March 24, 2017 - in a small-book format twenty after its first release in 1997.
The set chronicles the outstanding career of Elvis Presley (1954 to 1977) from a unique perspective and it includes 100 performances, 77 of which were previously unreleased in 1997. This historic overview traces his development as an artist and emphasizes how Elvis' music always returned to its unshakable core values. This 4-CD box set contains a 48-page book and consists mostly of previously unreleased alternate takes of Elvis Presley's hits.
There is no info on whether this 20th anniversary release includes audio upgrades of all the "77 were previously unreleased takes" which have since been remastered.
The publicity notes, "You probably think you've heard all there is to hear from The King, what with countless Elvis retrospectives, anthologies, and reissues flooding the market. While PLATINUM is far from the first Elvis boxset, it's unique in that it's composed largely of previously unreleased material. Four discs cover every phase of Presley's career, from young Memphis hip-shaker to the Las Vegas era, adding a fresh perspective to each period.
It's both an education and a kick to hear alternate versions of songs as ingrained in the public consciousness as 'That's All Right', and others from Elvis' legendary Sun sessions."
This title will be released on March 24, 2017.

'Elvis On Tour' boxset for 2017?: It would make sense to tie in the 2017 long-awaited 'Elvis On Tour' box-set with the already announced 'Elvis On Tour: 1972' FTD book. 2017 is also the 45th Anniversary of 'Elvis On Tour' and what a treat for Elvis collectors for the 40th Anniversary year.
Now the rumours look even more likely as Memphis audio-engineer Matt Ross-Spang (who did such a good job on the "Way Down in the Jungle Room" legacy release) recently announced to music magazine 'Tape Op' that "Now (Sony) have got me mixing some live shows, and rehearsals from Elvis' live shows."
What other shows could they be with rehearsals that need multitrack re-mixing?
Matt Ross-Spang also commented.. that since moving in to Sam Phillips' Memphis studio, "I've been mixing Elvis in here, which is funny. He got tired of recording in Nashville, so he demanded they record him at home. He'd done the record at American Sound Studio, obviously with From Elvis in Memphis. So then Felton Jarvis bought a bread truck, turned it into a mobile studio, and drove it down to Memphis. It promptly broke down in Jackson, Tennessee, so they towed it to Graceland, where it stayed until after Elvis died. We found one picture of the
outside, but we've been trying to find pictures of the inside of the truck. They recorded a bunch of dates in Graceland's Jungle Room, so I mixed a lot of that.
They put out the original masters, as well as all my mixes of the unreleased music [Way Down in the Jungle Room - see EIN review here]. Now they've got me mixing some live shows, and rehearsals from the live shows.
- (Hearing Elvis' voice) It's amazing! The studio banter is incredible too, because you hear Elvis completely relaxed in his "element." He really controlled the sessions musically, as well. He really pushes the band to get the feeling he wants. When I was mixing, they brought the guys down, so James Burton [guitar], Ronnie Tutt [drums], and Norbert Putnam [bassist] were there.
- (Ronnie Tutt) He's like Animal (from the Muppets) on the drums; just endless energy, especially with that double bass drum! Mixing the Elvis tracks has really inspired me with the artists I have been working with lately. Those Elvis records had incredible arrangements, with horns, strings, and The Stamps Quartet that really make choruses huge and the songs feel so cinematic. I really love the impact that they have on his records, so I've been stealing that idea!

'Elvis: Spirit Of Jackson, MS' - FTD In-depth Review: On May 5th 1975 Elvis performed a concert in aid of the McComb tornado victims at the State Fair Coliseum, Jackson, Mississippi. Elvis raised $108, 860 to help residents who were affected by the devastation. Since the audio for this benefit show is damaged beyond repair, 'Spirit Of Jackson, MS' includes two other shows from the State Fair Coliseum. Just over a month after the charity show, Elvis performed in Jackson again on June 8 1975 and this show is featured on Disc 2. Disc 1 is from September 5 1976 and one of his very best performances from 1976, prior to his stunning late December shows.
For once the set’s main show is the previously unreleased September 5, 1976 concert. Knowing how average/poor Elvis’ shows could be in 1976 this really is a positive statement from FTD that this is an important performance, and luckily recorded in superb quality sound...
Go here as Elvis soundboard super-collector Geoffrey McDonnell & EIN's Piers Beagley check out this new FTD double-pack .....

ELVIS - the UK's #5 Top Album of 2016: With 2016 done and dusted, the UK Official Charts Company released its list of the 40 biggest albums of 2016 and unsurprisingly they are primarily comprised of the latest releases by superstar musicians and singers.
However the big surprise is that over 40 years since Elvis Presley entered a recording studio his "new" album is the fifth UK biggest seller of 2016.
Adele of course led the way with her long-awaited album '25', and no other title could come even close. The British superstar’s latest massive album sold just over three-quarters of a million copies in the U.K. throughout 2016. Adele’s third full-length has now sold over three million copies in the singer’s home country alone, which makes it one of just 26 albums in British history to do so.
Behind Adele comes Coldplay’s album 'A Head Full Of Dreams', Michael Ball and Alfie Boe’s 'Together' and Justin Bieber’s 'Purpose'.
Elvis’ most recent orchestral release, The Wonder Of You, which also made it all the way to the No. 1 spot on the albums tally, giving The King a second leader in as many years.
David Bowie’s name appears three times on the full ranking more than any other artist due to the fact that his entire discography was snapped up by millions of fans in the legendary musician’s home country after his death last January. Two other artists, Elvis Presley and Michael Bublé, also managed to place more than just one title on the list, proving themselves to be some of the most popular artists still releasing new collections today.
Elvis' 2015 'If I Can Dream' charted again as #22 best seller.
The UK Top 6 biggest albums of 2016:
1. Adele - 25
2. Coldplay - A Head Full Of Dreams
3. Michael Ball & Alfie Boe - Together
4. Justin Bieber - Purpose
5. Elvis Presley & RPO - The Wonder Of You
6. David Bowie - Blackstar

'The Wonder Of You' Elvis with the RPO - In-depth CD Review: It is forty years since Elvis Presley entered a recording studio and he seems very reluctant to record anything new. So in terms of releasing a "new" album of Elvis material the topic has always been a tricky one. After the massive 2015 success of "Elvis with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" and ‘If I Can Dream’ the follow-up was inevitable and 'The Wonder Of You' recently achieved Number One in the UK album charts.
But can a follow-up really be as impressive - and do the true Elvis fans have to approve of these on-going fake "Revisions"?

Click here as EIN's Piers Beagley and Bryan Gruszka are back again to cause "Double-trouble" and supply a very detailed review, discovering what's good and bad...
And HAVE YOUR SAY - what do you think of the new album? Are we wrong in our opinions?

New FTD Releases OUT NOW: The slightly delayed two new FTD releases, 'Elvis Gold Records Vol.4' Classic Album and 'TODAY' album as a special Vinyl release using the Original Studio Session & outtakes are both OUT NOW and at your local Elvis Dealer.
- 'Elvis’ Gold Records Volume 4' (2-CD) 'Classic Album'
It was 10 years after the release of Elvis’ Golden Records in 1958, that RCA Victor released 'Elvis’ Gold Records Volume 4.' It contained seven ‘B’ sides and only five ‘A’ sides. Whether at the behest of Colonel Tom Parker, or RCA, the philosophy of not including tracks that already featured on existing albums weakened what could have been a more powerful and hit-laden compilation. Although omitted from Volume 3 for the same reason, the addition of “Can’t Help Falling In Love”, “Return To Sender” would surely have enhanced it’s sales potential and the inclusion of “Crying In The Chapel” (albeit included on How Great Thou Art in 1967) should have provided the icing on the cake. However, for dedicated Elvis fans, it was still rewarding to get these songs on a long-playing album for the first time such as “Love Letters”, “It Hurts Me” and “A Mess Of Blues”.

Other hits that could have featured are added to Disc 1 as Bonus Tracks plus some unreleased studio outtakes while Disc 2 features the entire original album in glorious mono!

Trevor Simpson talks "Elvis: His Songs of Praise": Out later this month is the first of two volumes titled "Elvis: His Songs of Praise" from author Trevor Simpson.
The two volumes will combine to over 700 pages chronicling the 100 sacred, spiritual and inspirational gospel songs sung by Elvis. Volume 1 promises over 350 pages with lavishly illustrated high-quality images, many unseen photographs and graphics as well as a 30-track special bonus CD.

'Way Down In The Jungle Room' VINYL OUT NOW: The special double-vinyl version of 'Way Down In The Jungle Room' is out now and available from Amazon UK (see below). The set celebrates the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ last recording sessions which took place in Graceland’s Jungle Room.
The publicity noted the sessions “have been newly mixed by Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording” and “includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a ‘fly-on-the-wall experience’ of what the sessions were like".
The vinyl release does not include the masters but instead features the making-of tracks from the second sensational disc of the general legacy double release.

UPDATED - 'Way Down In The Jungle Room' EIN Review:  Released for August 2016 this SONY Legacy pack celebrates the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ last recording sessions which took place in Graceland’s Jungle Room.
The publicity noted the sessions “have been newly mixed by Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording” and “includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a ‘fly-on-the-wall experience’ of what the sessions were like".
Elvis' original 76/77 albums were fairly uninspired collections (bar a few fine singles) and on the original LPs it was almost impossible to glimpse any sign of creative input from Elvis through the syrupy overdubs. It wasn't until the release of FTD’s magnificent ‘The Jungle Room Sessions’ that many fans began to understand the raw emotion, close camaraderie and Elvis’ personal feelings that were revealed by these intimate Graceland sessions.
To produce that same kind of revelation for the 'General Public' would be a very tricky project but that is exactly what the new legacy team has done - and to great effect.
Go here as EIN's Piers Beagley discovers the old Elvis magic and what is special for Elvis Collectors in our in-depth review
