- 'California Holiday': FTD Vinyl is pleased to announce the release of a special double-vinyl of Elvis’ 1966 soundtrack to 'California Holiday' aka 'Spinout'.
In October 1966 an MGM UK representative announced that California Holiday would have its world premiere in London, and that the original US title, Spinout, was changed because it was felt that would have more appeal to British and overseas audiences.
Spinout was only used in the US and Canada.
This unique FTD limited edition is based on the original UK release and features the red dot RCA Victor label.
The double album includes the original soundtrack masters, studio outtakes and bonus tracks.

'MEMPHIS' Elvis Week Listening Q&A: In celebration of Elvis new release fans today attended an Elvis Week highlight the "MEMPHIS Q&A and Listening Party".

Together with Tom Brown were producer Ernst Jørgensen, author Robert Gordon plus recording engineer Matt Ross-Spang.

You can now watch this interesting discussion on YouTube HERE - where they give backgrounds on the newly mixed tracks - and discuss the story behind the new box set.
Starts at 15 minutes in. Runs 70 minutes

'ELVIS Memphis' Mini Review: What better place to start with an insight into the new Elvis box-set than the 'Memphis Flyer' the weekly alternative newspaper serving the greater Memphis, Tennessee, area.
In the article, arts reporter Alex Greene discovers Elvis' Memphis soul.
The review's key points include..
'The King’s Hometown Cuts' - New mixes from four eras of Elvis Presley recording in Memphis.
Having incorporated elements of Sun Studio, Phillips Recording Service, and Ardent Studios into the design of his own Southern Grooves studio, Matt Ross-Spang has an ear for history, so it’s no wonder that he’s become the go-to guy for mixing Elvis Presley.
Following a brief similar to that of the From Elvis In Nashville album, Ross-Spang has outdone himself on the new box set dropping for Elvis Week, a set of five CDs and/or two LPs produced by Ernst Jørgensen, collecting everything Presley recorded in his adopted hometown. (<EIN Note, this is not actually true since some material has been omitted.)

Working from digital copies of the original multitrack tapes offered him a glimpse into the recording techniques of a bygone age. “I was really excited to work on the Stax and American stuff simply because I’m a Memphis history nut, and to get to hear those multitracks was really exciting. Working with Chips Moman at American, Elvis had a new band, a new producer, a new studio - everything was new. And yet Chips didn’t have nice technologies like RCA [in Nashville]. He committed all that music to four tracks, typically. And oftentimes he recorded the reverb chamber right onto the track. Or put the bass and the acoustic guitar on the same track. So it was really cool for me to open that up and see how much commitment he had, the vision he had from the beginning.”

Those American recordings yielded hits like “In the Ghetto” and “Suspicious Minds” but the familiar versions, exploding with those distinctive string arrangements, are only hinted at here. The MEMPHIS tracks reveal what preceded those orchestral flourishes: The sure-footed, house band Moman had assembled, aka The Memphis Boys, both soulful and rocking, playing their hearts out while the voice of Elvis rang out in the room. As Robert Gordon writes in the extensive liner notes, the new mixes put us “standing next to Elvis inside the recording studio, us and the basic band, hearing what he’s hearing.”

Moreover, it’s a master class in minimalist songcraft, as one hears guitarist Reggie Young weave his lines in with those of keyboardists Bobby Woods and Bobby Emmons, the latter’s organ parts suggesting an orchestra, yet molded out of rawer sounds. Here and there are occasional overdubs, as in the remarkable “Don’t Cry, Daddy” where Presley harmonizes with himself. As Ross-Spang explains, “We left in some of the overdubs that they did on the spot there, but we didn’t use things that they went back to Nashville to do.”

Ross-Spang didn’t have to mix these tracks entirely on his own. “It was really fun to get to work with Robert Gordon on this. I was sending him mixes and he was sending me notes back. And then producer Rob Santos and Ernst. Sometimes I can treat a mix too technically and not emotionally, but Ernst would give me very nontypical, emotional mix notes.” As the singer’s raw emotion explodes from the speakers, MEMPHIS reveals Elvis to be one of the premier soul artists of his time.

'ELVIS: MEMPHIS' OUT NOW: The new 5CD box-set - along with the double-VINYL - of Elvis' hometown recordings is at ELVIS dealers now! Other stores should have it by August 9.
Over 111 tracks ‘MEMPHIS’ captures Presley from his earliest sessions at Sun Studio to his final recordings in Graceland’s Jungle Room.
Produced by Ernst Jørgensen with rare material and new liner notes by GRAMMY-winning music historian Robert Gordon, ‘MEMPHIS’ (released in 5CD, 2LP plus digital) gives fresh insight into the bond between Elvis and his eternal home.

With the exception of the Sun recordings, all tracks on ‘MEMPHIS’ were newly mixed by GRAMMY-winner Matt Ross-Spang at Southern Grooves Memphis, with overdubs stripped away - to reveal only what Elvis heard live in the studio.

With this intimacy, new revelations abound, through it all, the listener is standing next to Elvis - hearing exactly what he is hearing.

In 1960 when asked what he missed about his hometown on his way back from the army, a 25-year-old Elvis answered: “Everything. I mean that - everything.”

'ELVIS: MEMPHIS': The 5CD box-set is the first fully comprehensive collection of Elvis Presley’s hometown recordings.
Over 111 tracks ‘MEMPHIS’ captures Presley from his earliest sessions at Sun Studio to his final recordings in Graceland’s Jungle Room. Along the way, the Bluff City serves as both home and muse to Presley, playing a pivotal role in the dramatic arc of his artistry as he finds creative rebirth at American Sound in 1969, overcomes personal struggles at Stax in 1973, and brings his most extravagant and spellbinding live show to the Mid-South Coliseum in 1974.
Produced by Ernst Jørgensen with rare material and new liner notes by GRAMMY-winning music historian Robert Gordon, ‘MEMPHIS’ (released in 5CD, 2LP plus digital) gives fresh insight into the bond between Elvis and his eternal home.
From the very first notes of ‘MEMPHIS’ the city’s immense influence on Elvis is clear. At Sun Studio he channeled a heady mix of Beale Street blues, the sounds of Dewey Phillips’ “Red, Hot & Blue” show WHBQ, and the all-night gospel performances he attended at nearby Ellis Auditorium. That distinctly Memphis blend would result in a singular, defining moment in the development of rock n roll.
When Elvis returned to recording in Memphis in 1969, nearly fifteen years later, he sensed a different pulse in the city. Teaming up with legendary producer Chips Moman at American Sound Studio, far from the glitz of Hollywood or the gloss of Nashville, Elvis sought out songs that reflected a more gimlet-eyed worldview, and put down some of the greatest performances of his career. Yielding indelible hits like “In The Ghetto” and “Suspicious Minds,” these sessions heralded an earthier sound - and an astonishing comeback for Presley.
With the exception of the Sun recordings, all tracks on ‘MEMPHIS’ were newly mixed by GRAMMY-winner Matt Ross-Spang at Southern Grooves Memphis, with overdubs stripped away - to reveal only what Elvis heard live in the studio. (Please Watch this great video>>)
With this intimacy, new revelations abound - from Elvis’ intuitive chemistry with “The Memphis Boys” at American, to the subtle way he builds his vocal phrasing around his backing singers at Stax or the palpable joy he brings to his final sessions in the Jungle Room. Through it all, the listener is standing next to Elvis - hearing exactly what he is hearing.

The STAX sessions of 1973 came during a tumultuous time in Elvis’ personal life. As he wrestled with the dissolution of his marriage and personal demons, the frenetic energy of his day-to-day life came through in the performances. On songs like “Promised Land” that energy radiates, while other selections like Tony Joe White’s “For Ol’ Times Sake” grapple with loneliness in the face of fresh heartbreak. Presley returned to Stax in December of that year revitalized, clearly connecting to material like “I Got A Feeling In My Body” and “Loving Arms” with a familiarly-electric charisma.

In 1974 Elvis was back home On-Stage with a full orchestra and more than 20 musicians accompanying him. Here, he performed songs by many early rock & roll legends - including Jerry Lee Lewis, Lloyd Price, Little Richard and Fats Domino - and also delivered a GRAMMY-winning rendition of “How Great Thou Art.” “It’s always been said that a person cannot return to their hometown,” Elvis says towards the end of the show. “But you have disproven that theory completely.”

Recording his final songs using RCA’s mobile rig at Graceland in 1976, Elvis sings with a passion that defies his poor health.

These stripped recordings strike an emotional chord as he interacts beautifully with his backing vocalists on “Danny Boy” or finds a deep pocket on the swinging “For The Heart.”

In 1960 when asked what he missed about his hometown on his way back from the army, a 25-year-old Elvis answered: “Everything. I mean that - everything.”

OUT August 9. You can now pre-order at Amazon for $71.

'Elvis: Stateline SAHARA '74' FTD In-Depth Review: 'ELVIS: Stateline Sahara 1974 Lake Tahoe' released as a 3-CD 5” digi-pak features three previously unreleased performances from Elvis' third Lake Tahoe season - May 19 (Evening show), May 20 (Midnight show) and May 25 (Midnight show).
Just two weeks before this Lake Tahoe season Elvis had been playing to audiences of over 18 thousand at the Los Angeles Forum, so it is understandable if Elvis sounds a little more on ‘cruise-control’ but being less O-T-T is also a positive in that they sound more intimate.

FTD have already released three concerts from this Tahoe season plus five of the best tracks from this set.
Go here as Elvis soundboard super-collector Geoffrey McDonnell & EIN's Piers Beagley investigate what fans may discover in these previously unheard performances

'The Blue Hawaii Sessions' Box-Set FTD In-Depth Review: Released last month, 'The Blue Hawaii Sessions' was the eleventh in FTD’s “complete sessions” packages. This is the audio-set that was released earlier as part of 'The Making Of Blue Hawaii'. The 8 inch deluxe 4-CD package includes the complete sessions "newly-mixed from the original 3-track tapes", a 24-page booklet with informative flashbacks from musicians, songwriters, session data, memorabilia and global chart information.
The set includes 50 'officially previously unreleased' session outtakes. However most of these have to be 'False-Starts'.
There is however over four hours of Polynesian influenced material to enjoy and lots of studio banter to eavesdrop on. The set also includes all twenty-nine takes of Elvis' classic chart-topper Can’t Help Falling In Love.

Over 5000 words EIN's Piers Beagley investigates in-depth what this new set offers and whether the previously unreleased outtakes add anything to our understanding of this important soundtrack session.....

'Elvis: Summer of '76' FTD In-depth Review: This new FTD set features three 1976 concerts, Charleston A/S July 24, Springfield E/S July 29 and Hampton Roads A/S August 1.
Things started going terribly wrong for Elvis in 1976. The beauty and on-stage power that he still exuded the previous year was fast fading away. Elvis' third tour of 1976 was one of his worst. Starting just 10 days after Elvis fired Red, Sonny West and Dave Hebler he was not in a good way.
Despite already releasing 27 concerts from this rather sad year, FTD have released yet another three 1976 performances and they are not good.
Collectors of course will appreciate that FTD have included two previously unknown soundboards here and they do help us explore what state our hero was in for his 1976 summer. However Elvis was obviously not in a good way which makes them rather sad....
Elvis soundboard super-collector Geoffrey McDonnell along with EIN's Piers Beagley explore this new FTD 1976 triple- pack to see whether fans could learn anything new...

EIN NOTE: FTD have previously released 'Spanish Eyes', 'Steamroller Blues' and 'How Great Thou Art' from May 19 plus 'Johnny B. Goode' and 'I'm Leaving' from May 25.
All of these full concerts are previously unreleased.
EIN noted in our review of FTD's 'High Sierra' ....
Spanish Eyes (May 19 DS) is a request "We made a promise to somebody that we'd do this" - not rushed and a concert highlight! One of the BEST ever performances.
I'm Leavin' (May 25 MS) is really superb version, conveying the sadness of the lyrics. The audio quality sparkles and this is possibly the first time Elvis sang this on-stage in 1974 before bringing it back as a regular for his Vegas summer season.

New FTD October Releases: The official FTD announcement is for these two new releases for October.
1. 'Elvis: Summer Of '76': As part of its ongoing live on tour series, FTD is pleased to announce the release of Elvis: Summer Of '76. Released as a 3-CD 5" digi-pak, this set features three 1976 concerts:
CD1 - Charleston, West Virginia, Afternoon Show, July 24
CD2 - Springfield, Massachusetts, Evening Show, July 29
CD3 - Hampton Roads, Afternoon Show, August 1.
EIN Note: FTD released another 1976 triple-pack back in early January and this third tour of 1976 was one of Elvis' worst. Starting just 10 days after Elvis fired Red, Sonny West and Dave Hebler he was not in a good way.
The Hampton Roads August 1 show has been out previously on bootleg (Fort Baxter’s ‘Bicentennial Elvis Experience') and Elvis sounds exhausted. Fans consider it one of his worst performances - what an odd choice for FTD to release. The only song of interest is a rough version of 'Return To Sender' but it's already released by FTD.
.. Priced at around US$62.

3.'Elvis: The His Hand In Mine Sessions' FTD's 3-CD "complete" 'His Hand In Mine' sessions is being reprinted.
This is an amazing success story as the "complete" sessions version only featured a few more minutes than FTD's original HHIM 'Classic Album' release from 2007.
