'Elvis: From Hollywood To Nashville'

The Essential 1957-58 Studio Masters

MRS VINYL

- Review by Piers Beagley

The new VINYL release from the MRS label ‘FROM HOLLYWOOD TO NASHVILLE - THE ESSENTIAL 1957-58 STUDIO MASTERS’.

A 180gram LP with a 4-page photo pullout poster. This Limited release of 1000 LP’s produced will be of 600 black and 400 clear vinyl editions.
Only black will be available through Amazon.

Featuring a delicious selection of Elvis' studio work from 1957 until he he got "drafted & shafted" in 1958, this album basically features all his studio recordings except for the movie soundtracks and the ubiquitous Christmas album.

From 'All Shook Up' to 'I Got Stung' Elvis was riding a creative peak.

EIN's Piers Beagley spins the disc....

Released by MRS on October 25, 2019 ‘FROM HOLLYWOOD TO NASHVILLE - THE ESSENTIAL 1957-58 STUDIO MASTERS’ was out just in time for my Birthday - and, as always, I love to spin some NEW Elvis VINYL as a true celebration.

AUDIO QUALITY: Once again the sound from this MRS heavy-duty vinyl is SENSATIONAL. The use of MRS’ Studio Ds remasters – lovely warm sound with some added compression – really works for vinyl. (They are taken from the Bonus Disc of the MRS 'Made In Germany' 2019 release). A beautiful quality pressing there truly is no background rumble or static and you can crank it up HIGH. There is a lovely warm bass, yet really clear top end. The 180gram vinyl sure works compared to my later RCA vinyl copies.

The packaging includes a beautiful 24” x 12” full-size studio photo taken when Elvis was in the army with two cracking photos on the other pages. The cover photo is super-sharp - see below.

There is a mini-mistake on the back cover where it notes "All tracks recorded at Radio Recorders, Hollywood, except Side B tracks 6-9 at RCA Studio B, Nashville".
It should of course be all six cuts from the June 1958 Studio B session, 'Side B tracks 4-9'.

The Music.
These classic tracks from Elvis' pre-army period hardly need discussing, you know how good they are. Kicking off with ‘All Shook Up’ it is cute that the album starts with Elvis’ marvelous comment “I got it swinging” before the count-in. It captures the feel of the studio session and the tracks that follow.

Overall it is a bunch of stunning fifties classics with some of my all-time favourites presented in a brand new order - as they were on the MRS book/cd release.

Apart from the stunning singles I can play tracks such as Elvis' takes on Ivory Joe Hunter's ‘I Need You So,’ Faron Young's ‘Is It So Strange’ and the guitar-slappin', laid-back ‘Have I Told You Lately That I Love You’ all day long!

Even Cole Porter's 'True Love' works so much better as a final track on side one rather than its rather strange positioning as the second track on Side B of the original 'Loving You' album.

A neat start to side 2 of the album is the full intro to the album version of ‘Don’t Leave Me Now’ “Let’s get it this time. DJ, give me a little heavier beat, I feel like I’m draggin’”, which then ups-the-pace with Elvis' sensationally raucous 'One Night'.

Interestingly without Elvis’ classic Movie singles (Jailhouse Rock etc) that so dominated this era of his in the charts, you can see that there was a period (I Beg of You / Wear My Ring Around Your Neck / Doncha' Think It's Time) where Elvis’ composers were struggling to come up with sure-fire stunners and then - at his last June 1958 session - Elvis blasts through with the amazing ‘I Need Your Love Tonight, ‘A Big Hunk O' Love’, ‘A Fool Such As I’, and ‘I Got Stung’ all in one evening.

The album wraps up with two nice alternates, the Undubbed 'Wear My Ring Around Your Neck' and 'Doncha' Think It's Time' a different edit originally released on 'Elvis' Golden Records Vol.2'.

Side A runs 23 minutes while Side B is a packed 25 minutes - it is certainly great value-for-money compared to RCA's original ten-song 'Elvis' Golden Records Vol.2' that was released at the time.

Overall Verdict: Another real treat for Elvis vinyl lovers and in stunning audio quality. A classic collection of fifties tracks that nicely varies from the usual 'greatest hits' type compilations. This selection made me want to crank-it-up and feel the vinyl warmth... What's a-wrong with me?, I'm itchin' like a man in a fuzzy tree.. I pity my neighbours who also had to enjoy this rockin' collection several times in a row as I celebrated my birthday. With only 1000 copies printed this will be another collectable.

Note that vinyl fans will have to search their Elvis Dealers for 'Clear Vinyl' copies as MRS state that they are out-of-stock!

'Elvis - Made In Germany’ In-Depth Review: The new MRS 'Elvis - Made In Germany – The Complete Private Recordings’ 4CD set contains more than 3 hours of the private recordings Elvis made while off duty in Germany when he was serving as a soldier in the US army during the 1958 -1960 period and, includes rare tracks from a recently discovered tape comprising over an hour of unheard personal recordings.
The 152-page hardback book contains rare photographs and documents plus a comprehensive text provided by Gordon Minto, which discusses each of Elvis’ RCA studio (non-film) recording sessions held during 1957-58, before focusing on the private recordings he made in Germany.
The BONUS CD features the essential RCA studio masters from 1957-58.

With such an expansive book, along with hours of Elvis jamming with his friends in Germany, there is plenty to discuss as well as finding out what extra material this set contains over the official releases.

‘ELVIS: Studio Sessions 1956' In-Depth Review: MRS newest release, a massive 3CD/172 page book compilation "Elvis Studio Sessions ‘56 The Complete Recordings". The 172-page book, with text by Gordon Minto, focuses on each of Elvis’ studio recording sessions during his first year of national stardom - from the first one in January, held in Nashville, then later in New York, before finishing his final session of the year in Hollywood in September. The full and comprehensive text is complemented by rare and previously unseen photographs and pieces of documentation.
The 3CDs contain the complete archival master and session studio recordings of Elvis Presley from 1956, along with bonus interviews. All 90 tracks have been remastered and restored. Also for the first time on CD is the complete ‘The Truth About Me’ from an original US 45rpm flexi-disc. Also included are all the out-takes from this interview.

Once again MRS release a first putting all of Elvis' key 1956 Studio Session masters onto one disc, with the addition of two other fully-packed cds of 1956 material and a stunning 172 page book. But what does this set offer over other previous releases
Go here as EIN's Nigel Patterson and Piers Beagley check out this new volume from MRS to find what is on offer. Includes stunning example photos & a detailed audio investigation.
