Elvis new Official CD Releases in 2014

All the SONY & FTD Release News

- EIN presents all the SONY & FTD Elvis CD news for 2014 -

FTD - What now, What next, Where to – What’s left?: During Elvis’ lifetime, RCA released a total of between 60 – 70 albums, consisting of dedicated recordings, movie soundtracks and live performances.
The FTD label has been doing an excellent job at looking at the recording anthology of Elvis Presley and releasing every significant LP or recording session on a 1CD or 2CD ‘Classic Album’ version.
However as noted with the recent "ELVIS" second LP release there are less and less outtakes and studio sessions left in the vaults.
FTD’s first release was ‘Burbank ’68’ fifteen years ago, so with all the past releases and packaging what is left for the collector?

Go here as EIN contributor Ian Garfield examines what has been released and what is left for the FTD collectors label..

'Elvis In Florida April 1975' FTD In-Depth Review: Mid 1975 found Elvis back in good form and having fun on stage. Officially we have so far heard almost nothing from the first part of Elvis' Tour#13 from April 24 - May 7.  This FTD features material from Elvis' Lakeland concerts on April 27th & 28th as well as Jacksonville April 25 1975.
The St. Petersburg Times commented … "But Elvis' forte is still the rockin' stuff, and he shows he hasn't lost what it takes. His Burning Love puts shame even to his own record version. When he launches into a slow, torchy Heartbreak Hotel, the inflections are vintage 1956"

FTD decided that this interesting selection deserved a release in the larger 7' format.

Go here as Elvis soundboard super-collector Geoffrey McDonnell checks out this previously unreleased concert and these unexplored April '75 concerts ....

'Elvis 80' with Duets and Remixes?: The Elvis Matters fan club is suggesting a rather strange collection for the 'Elvis 80' new album - It is believed to be a European only 80th Birthday release. The first CD 'King Of Rock 'n' Roll' will feature the regular twenty greatest hits tracks with CD 2 a similar 'King Of Love' 20-track selection BUT the third CD might feature a rather odd selection including 'Duets' and a selection of Remixes. Note that Dani Klein was featured on a VIVA ELVIS 'Love Me Tender' duet.

3. 'Flaming Star' FTD Soundtrack Album.
No tracklist or details have been supplied as yet.
Presumably it will include the complete outtakes from the October 1960 session. It should include the officially unreleased (overdub) outtakes of 'Britches', 'A Cane And A High Starched Collar' and other delights.

Release date late November.

Full details soon

4. 'Elvis' Christmas Album' - FTD Classic Album
No tracklist or details have been supplied as yet.
There is little unreleased from Elvis' classic 1957 Christmas album September session. There is a known short part of studio dialogue before 'White Christmas' but the main session outtakes have been lost. Perhaps some more extra studio banter has been found on the master count-ins.
There are however plenty of binaural outtakes from the January 1957 'Peace In The Valley', 'It Is No Secret' session etc.

Release date late November - just in time for Christmas.

Full details soon

'Showroom Internationale' New RSD Vinyl: A new vinyl album 'Showroom Internationale' a special numbered 2LP set is to be released for US Record Store Day.
The album will be released as RSD exclusives before becoming more generally available. Now in its seventh year, Record Store Day is an annual day-long celebration of record store culture taking place on the third Saturday in April plus an annual Black Friday (November 28, 2014) event occurring the day after Thanksgiving.
The publicity notes "Elvis Presley - Showroom Internationale 2LP - 180G 12" vinyl. The film "Elvis: That's The Way It Is" provided fans with their first real glimpse of Elvis performing at an absolute peak of his vocal prowess in August 1970. This individually numbered, 17 song, 2 LP set features the King's full August 12, 1970 dinner show and includes 13 previously unreleased performances."
The show is of course not previously unreleased as it is the same performance as released on the recent TTWII Legacy release as well as the Deluxe TTWII set.
While we may already have the concert, the album cover is damn fine!

FTD Releases August 2014: Three new releases announced for August 2014 release, a Classic Album, UK book, plus new LIVE vinyl album.
- ‘Elvis For Everyone’ – Classic Album.
This 2-Disc 7" Set Celebrates 1965’s Classic Album "Elvis For Everyone" and features a selection of previously officially unreleased session outtakes.
The original press release posted by RCA in August 1965 says, "This is the first Elvis Presley album since 1962 [POT LUCK] that is not a movie soundtrack album." In this new album, Presley demonstrates great versatility by singing a wide range of songs, familiar and unfamiliar, slow ballads and hard-driving rock’’n’rollers. Only one of these songs has ever been issued before ("Summer Kisses, Winter Tears"). The lead off-song, "Your Cheatin’ Heart." Is the title song of the new movie based on the life of Hank Williams., currently playing throughout the country … ..Varied repertoire and Elvis in top form make this really Elvis For Everyone."
Although it was compiled from previously unreleased recordings, it appeared like a breath of fresh air to Elvis fans that had become
somewhat tired of the formulaic soundtracks. The LP hit to the top 10 on both sides of the Atlantic.
This 2-CD classic edition features insightful essays, rare memorabilia and great outtakes!
It also features the rare overdubbed version of "Wild in The Country" that featured maracas and additional bass guitar. Although, the source remains a mystery to this day, it was supplied to RCA-UK for its stereo version of the album as a replacement for "Summer Kisses." This track had been issued two months before on RCA-UK’s unique album, Flaming Star And Summer Kisses.
Apart from OPTIONAL MASTERS that could have been used, DISC 2 contains 23 Previously Unreleased Outtakes from the ‘60s!!!!!!

- "Best Of British – The RCA Years 1957-1958
This is Elvis, with the continuation of the British story now detailing his RCA releases from 1957 - 1958. As a companion to the critically acclaimed and highly successful ‘Elvis: The Best Of British - The HMV Years’, this book contains the full history of over FIFTY iconic Elvis songs initially released by RCA in Great Britain. Again, each song has been thoroughly researched to the same high standards and is graphically catalogued.
Containing over 1000 illustrations, unpublished photographs and charts, together with rare items of memorabilia, this volume of ‘The RCA Years’ moves the story forward to explicitly reveal previously unknown facts and additional British connections to the songs.
Within these 500 pages and amongst many formerly unknown fascinating facts, you will discover:
The English pub that inspired an Elvis song!
Exactly where and when Elvis learned to play piano!
The real life characters contained within the lyrics of Jailhouse Rock!
The CD included with this book features many first-time officially released Elvis tracks. Here, amongst his classic songs, are the songwriters’ demo recordings as Elvis first heard them, plus the message he recorded on his home answer machine!
‘The RCA Years (1957 - 1958)’ chronicles the meteoric rise in Great Britain of the ‘Sun King’ to the man who would ultimately be crowned ‘Artist Of The 20th Century’.
Elvis innovated, others imitated!

The CD selection is exactly as EIN predicted with two concerts being officially released for the very first time.

That’s The Way It Is (Deluxe Edition) is the most ambitious Elvis Presley restoration package ever created, bringing together - for the first time ever - the album, the theatrical and home video versions of the film, six full-length concerts (featuring previously unreleased performances), rehearsal highlights and other rare recordings in one astounding and essential package. The result of an historic partnership between Sony and Warner Brothers, the deluxe set combines the video and audio assets of Elvis: That’s The Way It Is with unique and previously unreleased material.
The highly-collectible That’s The Way It Is (Deluxe Edition), bonuses include unreleased material, remixed and remastered audio and a new 80-page book detailing the entire event with facts, songwriter and musician interviews, and photos in a deluxe 8CD/2DVD box set.
Originally released on RCA Records in November 1970, Elvis: That's The Way It Is combined eight studio tracks, recorded in Nashville, and four live concert performances recorded in Las Vegas during Presley's 1970 "Summer Festival" season at The International Hotel in Las Vegas to create one of Elvis' best albums.
Though never considered a soundtrack album, Elvis: That's The Way It Is was initially released to accompany the first theatrical run of "Elvis: That's The Way It Is," a 1970 documentary feature, directed by Denis Sanders, which combined on-stage, off-stage and behind-the-scenes footage in Presley's first non-dramatic film since his 1956 Hollywood movie debut.
On June 4, 1970, Elvis arrived at RCA's Studio B in Nashville, where producer Felton Jarvis had assembled a hot new session band featuring Elvis' on-stage guitar legend James Burton. Five nights of recording generated material for no less than three future albums and four singles, including Elvis: That's The Way It Is and the essential Elvis Country.
On July 14, rehearsals for the movie and live shows commenced at the MGM lot in Culver City, California. The Hollywood cameras rolled for five different rehearsals prior to the opening night on August 10, including augmentation run-throughs with the singers and the orchestra at the hotel. Unquestionably, Elvis was keen to broaden his repertoire for the
film, as more than 60 songs were attempted during the period, far more than the usual average of 20 to 25 that would normally be chosen. Over the four nights filmed by MGM, Elvis and his band worked tirelessly, trying out a broad variety of musical styles, emphasizing his desire to share the wide range of music he loved with his audience. Director Denis Sanders captured the end result magnificently, providing fans throughout the world with their first glimpse of the new contemporary Elvis performing at the peak of his vocal prowess both in rehearsal and on the stage.
'That's The Way It Is (Deluxe Edition)' centers on the SIX complete shows recorded and partially filmed by MGM. Two of the shows are released for the first time in their entirety. The original RCA album is expanded with the four single sides from the period, and a selection of “fly-on-the-wall” outtakes from the June Nashville sessions that produced the majority of tracks for the album. Completing the audio section, a separate disc of insightful rehearsal highlights, featuring unusual song selections showcases both the hard work and the playful atmosphere that governed Elvis’ relationship with his musicians.
That's The Way It Is (Deluxe Edition) puts the original RCA album and the 1970 MGM documentary feature together in a single package for the first time. It includes the previously released original theatrical DVD version (1970) and the re-edited and extended DVD version from 2000.
(EIN note: What a shame not one scrap of new footage has been included. This would have been the perfect place and presumably indicates that there will never be an official release of any more MGM filmed material).

Monday 2 June 2014
Two New FTD Releases June: FTD is pleased to announce its new June 2014 releases.
- 'The Return To Vegas' - This is the official release of the soundboard recording that Joan Deary planned as a double album release back in the late seventies. It’s the earliest known professional recording from Elvis’ 1969 engagement in Las Vegas. The original tape box has "opening night" written on the back, but that’s not the real date. Some experts believe it’s from August 3, but we have no information what so ever to suggest a certain date.
However, the arrangements seem to suggest that this show is definitely several days earlier than the shows RCA recorded from August 20 and onwards. Why Joan Deary edited and mastered this for release is another mystery, since she of course had all the shows RCA recorded on 8-track tape with audio in substantially better quality. This release comes in a 7" digi-pack with a 12-pages booklet, featuring great photos from the collections of Steve Barile & Jim Patino, and a foreword by Ken Sharp.
Tracklist: 1. Blue Suede Shoes, 2. I Got A Woman, 3. All Shook Up, 4. Love Me Tender, 5. Jailhouse Rock / Don't Be Cruel, 6. Heartbreak

Hotel, 7. Hound Dog, 8. Memories, 9. Mystery Train / Tiger Man, 10. Monologue, 11. Baby, What You Want Me To Do, 12. Are You Lonesome Tonight?, 13. Yesterday / Hey Jude, 14. Introductions, 15. In The Ghetto, 16. Suspicious Minds, 17. What’d I Say, 18. Can’t Help Falling In Love.
Previously released on the bootleg 'Return Of A Prodigy' (see EIN review here), the remastered audio on this FTD is supposed to be far superior.
- 'Memphis To Nashville '61' FTD Book/CD: FTD Books and Flaming Star, in association with EPE, will release a new book – "Memphis To Nashville ’61" – in late June. This will give a comprehensive account of the two Memphis charity shows that Elvis performed at the Ellis Auditorium on a cold day in February 1961. The book includes accounts of that day and the events leading up to it. It features accounts from Elvis’ musicians, friends and fans, magazine- and newspaper articles from the time, and many rare and newly-discovered photographs. The collection of over 100 unpublished photographs, most of them in black and white, have been collected from many different sources; some are from original negatives whilst others are from original prints. Also included in the book is a section on Elvis’ visit to Nashville on March 8, 1961, less than two weeks after the benefit shows of February 25, to receive an honorary colonelship from the Governor of Tennessee, Buford Ellington. Furthermore, the final part of the volume includes information and details relating to the recording sessions held on March 12 and 13, 1961 that provided most of the tracks for the classic LP, "Something For Everybody". As an added bonus, the book comes with a CD containing the mono version of
"Something For Everybody" plus recordings of Elvis’ press conference, held at the Hotel Claridge in Memphis on February 25, 1961, and of the presentation of honours at the Tennessee State Capitol just 11 days later.
The 'Memphis To Nashville '61' Book includes a bonus CD. Tracklisting: Something For Everybody (mono version) 1) There's Always Me 2) Give Me The Right 3) It's A Sin 4) Sentimental Me 5) Starting Today 6) Gently 7) I'm Comin' Home 8) In Your Arms 9) Put The Blame On Me 10) Judy 11) I Want You With Me 12) I Slipped, I Stumbled, I Fell BONUS 13) Press Conference (March 25, 1961) 14) Elvis Is Made An Honorary Colonel (March 8 1961)
Both "The Return To Vegas" and "Nashville To Memphis '61" will be shipped last week of June.

'Bossa Nova Baby: Party Album' European version: Just when you think SONY has created a funky new cover for a party album (see below), they then come up with a crappy "K-Tel" type design for the "Bossa Nova Baby: The Ultimate Elvis Presley Party Album" European version! What were they thinking?
The European version features nine extra tracks, but then they totally dilute the content with rubbish like 'Stop, Look and Listen', 'Adam and Evil', 'What a Wonderful Life' and 'Girl Happy'. These are songs that will not be making GenZ dance across the floor - sometimes Less really is More!
Tracklist:1. Bossa Nova Baby - Viva Mix, 2. A Little Less Conversation - JXL Radio Edit Remix, 3. Burning Love - Viva Mix, 4. (Let's Have A) Party, 5. Jailhouse Rock, 6. Guitar Man, 7. King Creole - Viva Mix, 8. Viva Las Vegas, 9. What a Wonderful Life, 10. A Big Hunk O' Love, 11. Follow That Dream, 12. Rubberneckin' - Paul Oakenfold Remix, 13. Got a Lot O' Livin' to Do!, 14. Not only is the Warners Deluxe BluRay DVD Digibook movie being released, as well as the "Deluxe" 8 CD, 2 DVD set also being rumoured - but the two-CD 'That's the Way It Is' Legacy release has also been noted on amazon.

FTD of course released their version back in 2008 so one wonders what RCA/Legacy are going to include on the "General Public" Legacy version.

'ELVIS' FTD Classic Album Review: Elvis' fabulous second album, his first genuine album recorded for RCA. This is not a Greatest-Hits kind of collection, instead it contained twelve tracks of extraordinary variety - it is one of my favourite early Elvis albums.
There is no doubt that FTD had to produce this ‘ELVIS’ Classic Album version at some point - but it has to be a very different offering to the classic first LP as unfortunately the session tapes for nearly every song is missing. Another difference is that nearly all these tracks have already been remastered by Vic Anesini and have previously been released elsewhere.

So what is new? Is there anything that makes this FTD set worth collecting?
Go here as EIN's Piers Beagley checks out exactly what is offered on this new FTD release and could there have been more ....

'Walkin' Talkin' Glitz City Blues' New Import CD: Out soon is the new Straight Arrow CD release titled 'Walkin' Talkin' Glitz City Blues', featuring the August 23rd, 1972 Dinner show. It is taken from an original mono audience recording in remarkably good sound. Yes, we used the original actual cassette that was used to record this concert in the first place, and we were able to improve the sound-quality noticeably. Ask your local dealer for samples!
It’s unlikely that anyone who saw Elvis Presley on stage during the Summer ’72 engagement came away disappointed. Presley looked fabulous: he had a nice tan, he was slim, and both the jumpsuit and the jacket / pants combinations that he was experimenting with looked rather good on him. His shows that season were tight and highly professional, and truly offered something for everybody. The setlist was largely based on the MSG one, with new additions like ‘What Now My Love’ and ‘My Way’ adding extra spice to the show. The dinner show from August 23rd, 1972 is a topnotch performance. He’s right in the middle of the engagement, with still about two weeks left, but he
delivers the goods and puts his soul
especially into the power ballads. It’s not unlikely that he may have wanted to impress journalist Joe Delaney, a reviewer for the Las Vegas Sun and an old friend of the Colonel’s, who was in the audience that night.
It should be noted that the August 23, 1972 Dinner show is completely new, even for die-hard Elvis fans. This concert has never been in circulation in any form. Unfortunately the tape ran out before the finale of „My Way". The producers decided to use (great sounding) original tapes of the August 22nd, 1972 M/S and the August 23rd, 1972 M/S from their vaults, to fill out the missing part.
This release is presented in Straight Arrow‘s traditional deluxe digipack, designed by one of the best graphic artists in the Elvis world, rare photos from this engagement (he actually wore the blue swirl at this show) as well as intelligent liner-notes that give you the low-down on this show.

New FTD 'Summer Festival' Soundboard: The following teaser promo-poster has been put out by FTD publicising their soon-to-be-confirmed next soundboard release.

There is a suggestion that it might be a 'Summer Festival 1972' special and that it could be the September 4th 1972 Las Vegas dinner show where 250 British fan club members were present. This concert started interestingly with See See Rider / Johnny B. Goode / Until It's Time For You To Go (no 'I Got A Woman') and featured an excellent Suspicious Minds, For The Good Times, Big Hunk O' Love, You Gave Me A Mountain final section. In the Introductions Elvis even thanked the British fans for coming over.

It has been released on bootleg before (by Rock Legends) but not in particularly good audio quality. IF Ernst has tracked down a good quality soundboard then this will be a very fine FTD release.
EIN Notes that the above is all pure speculation.
More official details soon.

New Legacy Release for 2014: Elvis 'Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis' celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the King's triumphant 1974 return to his hometown with an expanded 2CD release of the monumental concert experience.
"I wanted to record a live session in my hometown of Memphis…after all, this is where it all started out for me." - Elvis Presley.
This 2CD Legacy Edition will be released on March 18, 2014 and features several tracks left off the original '74 release in addition to a wealth of unreleased material.
Disc 2 of the remastered edition presents a recently located MONO recording of a "test run" performance held for an ecstatic live audience on March 18, 1974, at the Richmond Coliseum two days before his historic return to Memphis. (This has of course been released on the FTD '48 Hours To Memphis'.)
As a special added bonus for Elvis aficionados, Disc 2 includes five intimate tracks (three of them previously unreleased) cut at the RCA Studios in Hollywood on August 16, 1974. Originally intended as reference recordings for an upcoming Las Vegas engagement, the performances, which include "Down In The Alley,"
"Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues," "Softly As I Leave You," "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "The Twelfth Of Never", provide a rare fly-on-the-wall glimpse into Elvis' consummate backstage artistry as he prepares these songs for concert. (Previously released on FTD 'From Sunset To Las Vegas')
Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis will include a 24 page booklet featuring rare photos, previously unseen memorabilia, new liner notes, press clips and more.

The musicians backing Elvis on Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis include James Burton and John Wilkinson (guitars); Charlie Hodge (guitar and vocals); Duke Bardwell (bass); Ronnie Tutt (drums); Glen D. Hardin (piano); The Sweet Inspirations, J.D. Sumner & The Stamps, Kathy Westmoreland (vocals) with Joe Guercio and his Orchestra.
Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis will include a 24 page booklet featuring rare photos, previously unseen memorabilia, new liner notes, press clips and more.
Following the artistic success of his 1973 Stax sessions and the global phenomenon of the Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite album and broadcast the same year, Elvis opened 1974 with a 15 city tour routed to end in Memphis and a state-of-the-art concert recording.
"I wanted to record a live session in my hometown of Memphis," said Elvis at the time. "After all, this is where it all started out for me."
Originally released on vinyl on July 7, 1974, Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis reached #1 on the Country charts and featured "How Great Thou Art," the track that would bring Elvis his third (and third Gospel) Grammy win.

'The On Stage Season' FTD Review: After their excellent "On Stage" multi-track Classic album, FTD now continues their look at this excellent season with the first official release of Elvis' 1970 Opening and Closing night performances.
"If I appear a little shaky that's because I'm a little shaky!" - Elvis, Las Vegas Jan 26th 1970.
On Opening Night Elvis introduced ten "brand new" songs to his Vegas setlist and what a treat it is to hear these for the first time live.
‘King Elvis Rules Vegas Again’ - As Elvis stood with his arms outstretched and head bowed in thanks, the curtain slowly fell and we were swept up with the excitement of the crowd which was at its peak. ... with every song, Elvis gave the audience exactly what they had come for: a chance to see and experience a living legend. Elvis a habit-forming' drug that does you good! - Journalist Ann Moses
EIN's Piers Beagley checks out this new release and decides whether it is worth buying these often bootlegged concerts one more time...

New FTD Releases out NOW: Elvis dealers at last have received their new October releases.
- 'The On Stage Season' - this 2-CD release features the two sensational Opening and Closing shows from January 26, 1970 and February 23, 1970. It comes with a 16-page 4-colour booklet, featuring great photographs from the season and a insightful essay by Ann Moses Marino.
Disc 1 - Opening night show January 26, 1970
Disc 2 - Closing night show Feb 23, 1970.

(A shame that the cover image of Elvis is obviously reversed!)

'Café Europa - G.I. Blues Vol. 2' - This 2-disc "Classic Album" 7” set follows on from the successful Volume 1 released back in 2012. The 16-page booklet features memorabilia, photographs and contains the long-awaited "In and Outtakes" information for both releases. Newly remastered and sounding better than any previous release, the original masters including studio banter have been newly remixed from the original studio tape.

‘Elvis At Stax’ [Deluxe] Reviews: More new sensational reviews of the new STAX release... Joe Marchese from the Second Disc website provides a very in-depth review including...
.. Elvis at Stax would be a landmark release simply for bringing the Stax masters together; even the most diehard Elvis fan will likely admit that most of his original album releases weren't crafted or packaged with an eye to posterity. But this box set adds 27 outtakes and alternate takes that allow listeners to trace the evolution of a song. This is a fly-on-the-wall experience, with plenty of stops, starts and in-studio chatter. Elvis at Stax offers a rare and immersive look at how Presley, producer Felton Jarvis, and their talented band developed each song into a memorable recording. Elvis is frequently looser on these early takes; the rolling tape captures him joking around, but also fiercely committed to getting each song just right. Elvis even riffs a bit, such as singing a few lines of "Softly, As I Leave You" while readying his pipes for a try at "Loving Arms," or clowning, grand opera-style, before "If You Don't Come Back." Sonically, these tracks are just as crisp as the finished masters for a true "you are there" feeling.
This Memphis soul stew is housed in an 8 x 8" slipcase similar to that of last year's Prince from Another Planet. A 42-page softcover book is also enclosed, containing an introduction by Roger Semon, a lengthy essay by Robert Gordon, and a full track listing with all relevant session information and complete discography. The book is generously illustrated, too, with well-captioned photographs of Elvis and assorted memorabilia relating to the sessions.
Vic Anesini has marvelously remastered all three discs, and the outtakes have been newly remixed by Steve Rosenthal and Rob Santos, the box set's co-producer with Ernest Mikael Jorgensen. Touching on all of the styles that shaped the one and only King - pop, R&B, country, gospel, and of course, rock and roll - Elvis at Stax chronicles some of his last truly great studio sessions. As such, it's another essential release as part of Legacy's streamlining and repackaging of his vast musical catalogue. When push came to shove, nobody took care of business quite like Elvis Presley.

"Aloha" New Legacy Release Sound Samples: Posted on the SONY Legacy website are three sound samples from the new up-coming Legacy Release. And they sound very fine indeed compared to the old 1988 'Alternate Aloha 'release.
'A Big Hunk O' Love' newly remixed Rehearsal show
'Suspicious Minds' newly remixed Rehearsal show
'Blue Hawaii' newly remaster from the after-show additions. Unfortunately here Elvis sounds as tired as ever, not surprising since they dragged him back after the biggest performance of his life to record extra fluff
